If I were looking into getting a 4runner, hypothetically, what gen/year group would be best and by best I mean, quality over time... Like if I were to start over again, getting a tacoma Id probably go 1st gen because everything works, theres nothing too fancy in them and they have the power and durability you want out of a vehicle.. what say ye my NM fam?

Honestly, they are Toyotas so, yeah, they are Toyotas.

Scott's neighbor picked up a 3rd Gen. They have the 3.4l like the 1st Gen Tacomas and really need a supercharger to make them fun. Nick (BigFishAllDay) has 3 of them I think. He can give you the ins and outs but they are very similar to the 1st Gen Tacomas with the exception of having the back end (fully boxed frame, coil springs and "trunk" instead of bed).

If you are looking for simple, that'd be 1st Gen with a solid front axle but getting rarer and rarer these days. Especially back East where rust is your enemy.

I'm looking at the 4th Gens right now, specficially 2005-2009 with the VVTi 4.0 V6. Numbers are good but they are big. I actually like the body style with 33s.

Whatever you do, make sure it has 4WD, mkay? :p

    I have too many Toyotas...
Everything... and a bag of Cheetos.
All of those pictures were taken within a one hour drive from Buena Vista, CO. It's by no means close.... about 5 hours from ABQ.

I know the feeling. I've missed a few myself for that very reason.

Yup yup. Headed back to CO.

UCA's?? What about the Icons you've got on there now? You must mean LCA's.

Poopers. Was hoping for a SFNF day trip. I might just host a wrench day that weekend instead. I really do need to get the front end redone before I ruin some tars. Steering is pretty bad and I know the alignment is way out.

Um, yeah, good catch. I meant LCAs. :D I decided to just replace them. Gives me time to work on the bushings without the stress of having to get it done.

Hey NM Taco - What is "stock" height on the first gen Taco? My '97, which is 4x, has 235/75/15 tires. I just went and measured, and the frame to ground height is 15", with what seems to be an 8" clearance under my rear diff (best I could tell without crawling under there to accurately measure). I am trying to make a decision on if I want to elevate it 2-3", if I want to go to 16", etc. I don't really plan to do any of the extreme wheeling some of you dudes do, and I am not keen on putting extra pressure on the boots if I get that thing up too high. This truck is not my daily commuter, but we will use it for long hikes to go camping and such, so I don't want to bottom out my mileage with aggressive wheels and tires.

Popped my 4x cherry just now in my teenage Taco. I've only had it about 2 weeks, this was the first 4x I did. Short, but we have some sand and hills right near my house so took it for a twirl. Nice. Scaled a fair grade hill then back down the other side, deep sand in a wash, that sort of thing. Handled excellently.

Nice. But, depends on whether being lost is the ideal state! I can think of a few weeks it wouldn't have bothered me being lost :D

Among many other things needing done. ;)

Maps of Glorieta Mesa, Cedro Peak, Sandia Peak and the southside of the Caldera. Probably order the northside and the Taos area next time.
