Hey all, long time reader, first time making a thread. About a year ago I installed a OME 3" lift into my truck, and I decided last week it was time to get some bigger tires. I ended up getting the 285/17/16 Geolanders and so far they have been great... except there is slight rub.

In order to figure out where the rub was occurring, I did a little "experiment." I removed the mud flap on the passenger side, but left the driver's side mud flap attached... and then drove my truck around the parking lot, making sure to drive in forward and reverse at all different angles. The rub points can be seen here:

    Passenger Flap Removed.jpg

It looks like there is no rub on the passenger side with the mud flap removed, but the driver's side is rubbing in the front and back of the well when the mud flap is present. Is this level of rub safe, or should I trim? I haven't gone off-road with this setup yet and I'm worried the rubbing will get worse if the suspension gets moving....

Also, I think this might be slight rubbing on the arm, can anyone confirm? Will I need wheel spacers to fix this or can I just sand down the nub??

I am currently rebuilding my UCA's today, and it would be nice to get this issue taken care of at the same time... if anyone could provide some advice today it would be greatly appreciated!

    ^THIS.

I had to trim those two spots with my 285's too. I just used a dremel and 5 min of my time. A CMC was also done too. I don't have any other issues. But, like you, I have not wheeled it yet and I am sure there will be more to trim.

Wheels are the TRD ones: 16" and 7.5" wide. The UCAs are Total Chaos.

When you'll put spacer, you'll probably get extra rub as well since the wheels will be sticking out a bit...

33'' = Time to start trimming...

That's why I went with 32'' instead, didn't want to trim anything on my brand new truck...

Measure your height from bottom of fender to center of wheel on both sides. If you are having a taco lean buy a 1/4" top plate spacer from Toytec and install it. It will probably rid you of the rubbing.

Front mudflaps off, Heat gun, razor knife, tin snips, zip ties....

Remove, bend, and reshape stuff until there's room.

It's no big deal. No one who doesn't know tacomas will be able to notice you did anything at all, and even then only by getting up close and personal looking inside the wheelwell.

Most folks won't even notice you removed the front mudflaps.

@Large: I will measure as soon as I get home, come to think of it, I think I do have a slight lean.

@bjmoose: I used your OME installation thread as a guide for when I did mine (awesome guide), I'll break out the heat gun and cutters and start shedding things off tonight.

    Update:

Large: You were correct about the lean, here are my measurements:

    Front Driver: 22.5"
    Front Passenger: 23.5

    Rear Driver: 23.5
    Rear Passenger: 24.5

The lean on my driver's side seems to be causing the heavier rub on that side.

I'll be ordering up some 1/4" spacers to correct this and will install them when I do some trimming. Thanks everyone for all the help!

A friend of mine has those tires and they are noticeably bigger than my nittos in the same size. I actually asked him when I saw them if he got 35's.
