Nissan has already announced they're putting a Cummins V8 diesel in the Titan. Might be cheaper to let someone else do the development work. This is kind of a natural follow-up to the Titan.

And from what I hear it's already an existing engine. Plus it doesn't hurt to have a little name recognition. I mean look at all the Diesel engines Toyota has yet they were briefly testing a truck that uses that same 5.0 Cummins the Titan is getting.

    Emissions.
I don't think that any of the Euro-spec diesels Nissan currently produces would meet US emissions regulations without a pretty heavy redesign. It's probably easier to contract the job out to a company that's already equipped to produce engines that meet the US emissions regs.

Nissan and Chrysler already have a pretty big partnership, including trucks. I'm sure it was easier for them to work with Chrysler and Cummins than fully develop the diesel for themselves. There may very well be language in the partnership that requires them to share information regarding diesels in regular and light duty trucks, so that Chrysler can use the technology and R&D in their own vehicles (Jeep, Ram, etc.).

Nissan has been talking about using cummins dieslels back in 2009 when I bought my frontier. I know it's been in talks for while now. I really wish they offered a 3.0 diesel for the tacoma...

    Older, article, but: http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB120820911717614131

Basically stated RAM was going to start building the Titan in 2010 (don't know if that happened). A lot of the talk was back in 2008, but the 2 companies have been working together obviously quite a bit since then. I am not sure the level of their partnership today, I just think it made sense for Nissan to use Cummins since Chrysler already is so involved with Cummins and they have some kind of partnership.

I think the biggest thing that turns toyota away from introducing their diesel engine into the us is the emissions regulations. I don't think the demand for a diesel powered tacoma is enough to offset the cost of production. That being said, if it was to happen, I'd be on it faster than a fat kid on a doughnut :D.

Actually, since that article was written in 2008 a lot has changed. Chrysler was part of Daimler at the time. Since then, Nissan has linked in with Renault, and Chrysler is now owned by Fiat. The new Diesel engines in the Ram 1500 and the Grand Cherokee are from another Fiat subsidiary. I follow the automobile industry pretty closely and as far as I know the Nissan and Chrysler partnership never came to anything.

Yeah, your'e right, the partnership is dead (circa 2009). Guess it never materialized. I do think there's a reason that they chose Cummins...although it could be for no other reason than they wanted to piggyback off of the legendary reputation the Cummins Dodge diesels have.

Yeah, I did a little research as well. According to an article in Motor Trend in November 2011, the partnership fell apart when Chrysler declared bankruptcy in 2009.

I think the real reason Nissan is using the Cummins engine is because Cummins is aggressively marketing it. According to Truck Trends, Cummins just released a commercial version of the engine, although specifics of the Nissan engine haven't been released.

Toyota...are you listening? I'd trade in for a diesel Tacoma in a heartbeat.

After a brief search I didnt find anything specific, but I bet Nissan's euro diesel isnt actually Nissan. There is a Nissan Diesel, now called UD, but they are mostly heavy duty stuff. Noone in the light duty builds their own diesel, with the exception of Fords new 6.7. Who's diesel would you rather have? Some no-name euro diesel, or Indiana's own Cummins?
