Yes, I realize the drums already do a perfectly good job. I just prefer discs.

With that said, I imagine it's a similar setup already. Any confirmation?

The lug patter is the same so yes the discs themselves would fit. The problem is you would need to remove the drum brakes and the backing plates and anythin to do with the drum brake system. Then fabricate brackets on the axle tubes for the calipers to mount too. Then you'd need a different master cylinder since the calipers require more fluid than wheel cylinders. Plus there's a few little odds and ends I'm forgetting.

A new master cylinder isn't necessary, but perhaps the stock FJ rear end could be compared to the stock Toyota rear end to determine exactly what is necessary there.

The '03+ 4Runners also had rear disk. I am not sure what is different between the FJ & 4R.

I haven't measured or looked in-depth of this. I think that the Rear brake/axle mounts are the same between the drums & disk on the axle; they look to have the same 4 bolt mounts on the axle tube.

    Check out the build
I like the idea. The FJ's have a lot more going on in terms of suspension and linkage, but I wonder if everything else underneath is the same.

Maybe the two ways of going about is it to get a stock FJ rear, remove all the linkage and suspension supports and weald the appropriate Tacoma ones.

Or, get the rear axel components of the FJ and see if they bolt up to the Taco or weld the right disk mounts.

the question is why do you prefer disks? For our trucks unless you are doing some seroius racing or towing WAY past the tow rating drums are way more than necessary.

I can lock up the rears without trying on the stock drums. Throw disks in there are you will be overbreaked in the rears.

I prefer disk brakes over drums as well. Why? Because drum brakes remind me of old (read: not modern) cars and/or economy cars. That, and they just look cooler. Not everything has to be about function, sometimes you just want your car to look cool.

Do I need them on my Tacoma? No, the factory brakes are more than adequate for my needs. But I would totally "upgrade" to rear disks if I came upon a good/inexpensive option to do so.

It has nothing to do with stopping power, I just hate rebuilding drums. It's an ancient technology.

Maybe OP just wants to update his dinosaur technology truck to post 2000 standards? Sure they might "do the job" but when your Tacoma has drums and every other Toyota product (every 03+ 4 runner, Landcruisers, sequoias, Tundras, gx470s) and competitors all have disc brakes, it just makes your vehicle feel cheap imho. Lets throw in my old ass 1994 Honda Civic Si in there too, which had 4 wheel disc brakes and ABS.

"Drums do the job" but disc brakes are better and look better.

for a truck application where you have a COMPOSITE bed.... IE no weight in the rear they are preferable.

You can bitch and moan about them.... my dads 04 tacoma prerunner has all stock from the factory parts that have never been touched and they work flawless.... at 220k miles.

That's great, but it's irrelevant to the topic. This isn't a "are rear disks better/lighter/more functional/longer lasting?" thread, it's a "what are my options if I want rear disks?" thread.

This is the only reason I want discs in the rear.

It can be good to do something just because you can., for the challenge or uniqueness. As long as it is not degrading a safety system, no one should care.
Anything can be done. It is just a matter of money. Ensure you do it right, don't skimp and test fully.
    And post the details!

Wouldn't the proportioning and ABS be all wrong if you swap to discs? You'd probably need the master cylinder or abs controller from the FJ to get it to work correctly.
