My stock CAT crapped out at 127k (2007 2.7L). Toyota wanted $1.8k to replace.

Local shop put a aftermarket CAT on, replacing the CAT and Pre-CAT. Truck runs fine now but holy hell does it sound like crap. I was never a fan of the stock sound, but now even further unrestricted it sounds so bad and so loud in the cab.

What are my options to quiet this down, and maybe deepen the pitch a bit?

What are you running for the rest of your exhaust?

It's all stock right now, other than the 2 factory catalytic converters replaced with one aftermarket.

With the stock muffler and tailpipe your truck should still be quiet regardless of the cat. Are you sure there are no exhaust leaks? Gasketed joints are likely culprits especially if old gaskets are reused. It's also worth closely checking your muffler for any small rusted out holes.

I would swear your correct. But I couldn't find any problems while crawling around with the truck on the ground. Said muffler shop, and local Toyota service center claim I'm just hearing what's coming from the end of the tip and that they don't see any leaks.

Maybe I need to mount the ADV cam on the truck and get some video to demonstrate what I'm hearing.

Yes, a video might be helpful. Also one from inside your cab. I ran my stock muffler with a long tube header and the exhaust pipe chopped off after the rear axle and it still wasn't any louder. There's also another possibility, your muffler could simply be worn out internally.

Ok, if it's not raining tomorrow I'll try to grab some in/out vids.

Got an email back from Magnaflow. Based on the rasp and volume I described they're recommending a 5 x 8 x 18 inch muffler. I think I've seen vids of these and they were pretty loud.

    That's a great help.:)
Sounds to me like you simply have a worn out stock muffler. If the inner chambers rust out and break down, they rattle around inside and you'll get more sound and rasp. It's a simple matter to get another muffler welded in.

For a Magnaflow, I'd recommend the larger 22 inch long oval muffler. I had one on my truck and it had NO rasp and NO cab drone.

    Sweet, thanks.

Do I need a straight or an offset?

And is it 2.25 or 2.5 in / out?

    I had a 2.5" center in/offset out installed.

It's a big muffler but it even fit my short standard cab 5 lug.

Do you remember which model it was? I can't find a 22" muffler in 5x8. Looks like they have a 18" and a 24"

I measured the exhaust today. Looks like the pipe in and out of the muffler is 60mm. Do I need 2.5" or 2.25" ports?

    It's a Magnaflow #12586, 5" X 11" oval, 22 inch long body, 2.5" muffler. :)

HOLY CRAP, this is loud! I feel ridiculous driving around like this...

Before I left with it I asked the installer how loud it was when they test drove it. He said it wasn't but that he would recommend a resonator exhaust tip to take out the "rasp".

It's quieter than stock at idle, but any gas at all and i get a drone I can hear and feel in the floorboards.

I've been hit with a cold recently, can't get motivated to create another video at the moment.

I had the truck up at Midas the a couple weeks ago to check for exhaust leaks. They stuck a rag in the tail pipe and truck went quiet.

When they put it up on the lift, what I found was that the first exhaust shop I took it to put a aftermarket CAT in place that was about the size of two 12oz cans.

I went home and ordered the Magnaflow OE cat from my local shop (undercut Amazon but $40). They got it in and installed it this past week. SOOO much better. I'll post a video when I can.

Now I can hear a exhaust (flutter?) sound coming from the front of the truck. Could be a leaky gasket on the new install, or (hopefully not) the header.
