Finally put 285's on the truck, and after doing so I figured I'd share a few things that I learned. 1st the 285's clear with FJ wheels. It's close but they clear. 2nd the 285's seem to handle driving down dirt roads much smoother than 255's or 265's, and 3rd as happy as I am with the 285's I am now thinking the next set will be 35's. But figured I'd do a little photo tribute to the truck over the time I've had her.

I put 285s on my 2008 which had the FJ Trail Team SE wheels on it...like you said...it was really close, but they did clear.

What the backspacing on them? My stock TRD Off-Road wheels were 5.5 and they cleared after my 3" lift but it was only enough room for me to fit a finger between the wheel and UCA. Did you do a cab mount chop? Are you gonna lift it more to run 35's? I've heard of people stuffing 35's with just a 3" lift.

I think the backspacing on the FJ wheels is 4.5...

Say whaaa? I was told they were the same as the TRD wheels (5.5bs) that's why I went with my procomps for the 4.5 bs so they'll fit with the Maxtrac spindles. If I had known that last year then I would have bought a set of these instead. Dang....

I never measured them, but I was told they were/are 4.5"

    Next came the wheels. EA7D98E1-B5EB-46C9-AEB0-40324198D297_zps_7ff04378f8bc7098a225b23084249e61987c03d5.jpg

Changed the wheels from the 265/70r16 to a set of sport wheels with 265/70r17 revos 24F8B8FF-D264-4217-A5FB-24685F2BFCDE_zps_5de771c83e2ccae66423442c088021f7715c6cb1.jpg

Struts and shocks were toast so on went the 5100's and the AAL30D36953-F2C4-4CA2-893C-12BA1DFF0FB6_zps_97869cdfbea62f3b6ebbe5683c2e6d5c6a2f2237.jpg

Blacked out the grill, and headlights as well as the lower valence 540F8657-66B2-48BE-B1AD-4B73ADF19B3E_zps_d96a4056be1a4722cbfae4bf53449c807acdbfe2.jpg

Plastidiped the fender flares and put on a set of FJ wheels. Had a chunk of ice peel a part of the plastidip off so took all of it off the fender flares 9E362BC0-3923-450B-88F8-A8248C398361_zps_265ed97b9cd9569e390e7435f1a20398ac23ac65.jpg

Changed the 265/70r17 BFG AT KOs for a set of 255/75r17. Plastidiped the FJ wheels just to see if I liked it will probably have them powder coated soon. DDE91CB6-0E05-47AD-812D-644401184FA6_zps_755519a0c8d0cfccb7f97378d5a4da4f82f628e8.jpg

The 255/75r17s were great till they got to about a 1/4 tread left, couldn't get traction any time it sprinkled. So got a great deal on a set of 285's so on they went. This is how she sits as of now will be starting the prep for 35's before to long. Going to try to stay away from fiber glass fenders so from what I've seen I'm in for a bit of work. 3DA07B64-1A7A-4E52-A7D0-6894855CAD9A_zps_0fd3286c3035dcb6a93265b4e4c5dad0a41379f8.jpg

Sorry it took a minute to get the pics up. Pretty sure the FJ wheels wheels were at 4.75 when I measured them. I think with an aggressive mud terrain they would probably rub without spacers. But they clear all terrains.

Pretty sure they are 4.75 backspacing. Haven't done the CMC yet, will be doing it soon. I'm going to try and keep the lift to 3" and run 35's. I've read a few of the build threads on here of the others that have done that and it seems I have my work cut out for me.

Yeah, I figured it would be a lot of work. That's why I'm just gonna go with some Maxtrac spindles and have the truck at 6.5." I think that will give me enough room to fit 35's, lol. Hell, maybe even 37's! Goodbye MPG's!!!

Who needs MPG anyway. Its overrated. Anyone on here that was worried about MPG they would have bought a Prius. No offense meant to anyone who actually drives a Prius.

Speaking of MPGs.....what are you getting now compared to the smaller tires?

I went down to about 16mpg when I went to the 285s, but I had done a 3" lift at the same time so that didn't help either.

Thanks all. When I did the lift it dropped the MPG down from upper 19's to 18. Swapping from the revos to the BFG AT KO it took a dive to high 16's low 17 range. I was getting 17-18 combined MPG with the 255's I'm getting about 20-25 miles less till the low fuel light comes on with the 285's, so I figure I'm right back to the 16's again.
