You missed the point. The scanners these guys are using travel up and down the spectrum until a car ... any car ... responds & unlocks. That means any car that uses keyless entry (and soon keyless ignition) is vulnerable to this kind hack. If this becomes widespread, the answer is to disble keyless entry. Problem solved, and I say fine by me. I'm happy to use key only, especially when I leave my truck at trailheads for as much as a week.

So anybody know if there's a dedicated fuse for the keyless entry circuit or not? It'd be nice to know.

That's all well and good until the thief than pulls out their own gun, shoots you, and now is cleared on charges being he was in fear for his life and it was self defense.

I didn't miss a point, and FWIW this will never be "widespread." Criminals are a miniscule amount of the population. Pull off your door panels and disconnect the actuator that open and closes your lock mechanism.

Your fear of someone using an electronic device while you're in the back country to open your truck is about as likely as getting hit by a train while you're hiking. A meth head is far more likely to be in your area than a career auto thief, and they'll just break your window or light your truck on fire.

About the only time I'd see something like this being used consistently would be in a high end neighborhood or at an upscale hotel where the take would benefit the investment in electronics. Most criminals just use more brazen means. I mentioned my truck whose window was smashed out at 11 AM in a crowded suburban parking lot. I also found this on YouTube the other day, which makes me think that I'm going to be locking my truck when filling up with gas in a city from now on.

I can't believe people wouldn't lock their doors automatically anytime you get out of your car. Or better yet lock your house when you are home or even worse when you leave.

I guess most people don't live in urban areas and didn't grow up in the hood and learn valuable life lessons early on.

My neighbor down in MS makes fun of me every time I am down there and roll up my windows and lock my doors in broad daylight. It is one road in one road out dead end and we're 1 1/2 miles down the road but better safe than sorry.

You have to give the Jihodgy's and their Shaira laws partial credit for cutting off the hands of thieves and so forth.

My Truck was broken into as well. Busted the sliding window in the rear. Took a bunch of dumb stuff.. CD's and Ratchet Straps.. Didn't even take the cash in my storage under steering wheel. Found out it was some Gang Bangers that mooch off of Grandma around the corner.. Anyhoo, I found this guy from my Mom in Michigan. And he cuts the glass makes the clip and everything for $129, he has a how to video on the installation. The guys name is Brad Finkbeiner and his number is (231) 263-3169. Search his name on Youtube and its Brad Auto Glass America.. And if youre a complete non-D.I.Y.er you can pay someone $100 to install...

Well like I said, biggest bummer/worst things they took are my knife and the dogs training collar (which is like $240). I just worry about the person who now has my knife and their intentions with it. I'm just glad they didn't find the storage behind the seats because I had a double headed ax and a tomahawk back there.

Oh well. Shit happens right? I have bigger things to deal with in my life right now, and thats why I have insurance.

I think with the insurance money I'll get a Gransfors small forest ax :D
    http://www.gransforsbruk.com/en/products/forest-axes/gransfors-small-forest-axe/
as a replacement for the fixed blade knife.
I'll likely also get a new dog collar, as I hope to get a new pup relatively soon.

Sorry to hear all that man. My truck was broken into 2 years ago. They took my gym bag, ipod, pioneer double din, sunglasses, gum, and tore my dash apart. I'm still replacing interior pieces. The radio surround was destroyed from where the radio mounts. They just broke the plastic brackets and took it. They got maybe $500 worth of stuff. Funny thing is, when the cops came, the thieves bag of pills was layin in the bed. Cop said it was about $1000 worth of oxycontin, in the end they probably stole it all for drugs but lost theirs in the process, irony! lol. Either way, it's such a violating feeling. My wifes car was broken into also a few months ago. Had the car for 3 weeks but my wife forgot to lock the doors and all they got were our sunglasses.

For reals though. I would rather get my truck stolen than have to use a key like I'm homeless. I have insurance on my 4runner, not on my social stature :p

That's sarcasm in case you couldn't tell
