I'll bet you're right, that may be why my brother broke his. Could also be another screw or two holding the thing on... Shine a flashlight up in there and see what holds the arm on, that may help.

Just experimented with it. Theres really nothing holding it on. All you have to do is push it down. However, I did a test. I had the temp on cold. I shined a flashlight on the arm and watched it as I switched it from cold to hot. Moved just fine. Then I moved it back to cold and it didnt move all the way back to where it was. Moved the arm manually all the way to the left and boom, cold A/C again. So my guess is theres a blockage somewhere in the gears to where it isnt allowing it to move past a certain point on its own.

Pulled it apart.... Held on there by 3 screws, plus one screw that holds the clip that holds the wire, then there are some small clips you have to pry apart.

I only found two screws plus the one holding the wire. Where is the third?

Mine is a 03 so who knows how different they are.... the 3rd screw was in the back, very hard to get to. Can't even see it, but you can blindly feel it.
Had to use a small screw driver to get to it.

I'd call it a servo but who knows what Toyota calls it. I'd guess dealer item if I had to get one. At least the dealer can find the part and a Google search might find an alternative.

Did you press the A/C button when you turned the dial to heat?

The A/C button was off. It was the arm that was the issue. I watched it only move 3/4 the way when I put it to the A/C from the heat. Some gunk probably was preventing it. Still haven't screwed it back together but its working fine now
