Bummer! My dealer charged $36 for the synthetic upgrade. Still, worth every penny I'd say.

First oil change around 2.3k, then switched to Mobil 1 syn 5-30 around 5K. Toyota filters. My last truck had Mobil 1 syn in it (diff, 6spd trans, & engine) till the day I sold it. Ran like new.

What I'm wondering about is if anyone has put Mobil 1 syn ATF in their autos?

Same here....used all 5 FREE changes then Mobil1 Extended (because it is the same price as the normal 5w-30 sync) and Toy oil filter (bought 10 from SewellParts.com), replace new filter every 3500-4000 miles then change oil/filter at 7000-8000 miles.

I like Mobil 1 because there is no foil under the caps to deal with. I hate that shit. Castrol is the same, so I like Castrol too.

Mobil 1 or Penszoil Platinum, which ever is first to get to on the shelf or cheapest at Wally World.

    Things I need to tow.
I change oil twice a year (April 1st and October 1st) regardless of mileage, but it averages around 4500-6500 for each interval. I use Mobil 1 0-30 in October for the winter and 0-40 in April for the summer (same as my 4-cylinder RAV4). I buy a 10 pack case of OEM filters from one of several eBay vendors for around $45 with free shipping. Everyone does their own maintenance according to their own comfort level. There are many fine oils, both natural and synthetic, and several filter makers make decent products.

One thing the RAV4 (and other Toyota/Lexus models) has is a canister filter with a replaceable element and I wouldn't be surprised if the next gen Tacoma goes this route. This allows the manufacturer to provide a sturdy reusable filter case with properly engineered (and consistent) pressure and bypass valves and all you do is replace the filter media itself. It's not as convenient as a throw away spin-on, but you really don't know what you're getting for certain with those regardless of who makes them and I've never fully trusted them. Your method will vary.

Just the thread I wanted before creating a new one...
I had me first oil change yesterday on my '14 taco at 4957 miles.
I get oil changes for free, but when the wife dropped it off (because I couldn't) I told her to INSIST that they use synthetic.
Of course they told her it's not necessary, and will cost...but she told them I said to do so and they did. It was $49 for the change
They also said that I still have to follow the 5000 mile interval regardless of oil blend used or else I'll have to pay full price for changes after the mileage has passed. Hmmm.

Now I'm familiar with German auto dealer robbery so...
Is it worth going this route and paying what looks like $50 every 5000K?
Or should I stick to regular oil at 5000K intervals for totally free?
Or should I say screw everyone and change my own oil...warranty void issues perhaps?

It would cost you $30-35 to just diy with M1 and a Toyota filter. Math is easy.... Your call of if you want to diy or not.

What ever is on sale at WalMart @ 5K. $14-16. In 52 years of driving I have yet to lose an engine longest mileage was a 1980 SR5 pickup 312,000 miles before I had to scrap for it's rust value.

    Didn't even think about that.
I thought the dealer would allow me to pay for just the cost difference in oil as the labor would be free anyway,
but it looks like they make me pay for full service and not a pro rate. Everyone is a crook apparently. So the question is then regular or synthetic??

    Thanks.

Perfect, so I'll leave it to the professionals then.
It's tough to sit back and have people work on your car as you wait/watch.
    Gotta wait until she's old.
    Okay.

I moved to Mobil 1 on my first oil change. I also debated taking advantage of the "free" maintenance program from Toyota. I decided it would be less time consuming and much more peace of mind doing it myself. The cost is minimal for me and I've just read about too many "issues" with the dealer.

I've been using Mobil 1 on all my vehicles for over a decade now and I'm pleased with the results. Not that I've done any real world comparisons.

Exactly my point, but my experiences in the past has me thinking if there are any engine related issues, and the dealer cannot prove you have been doing oil changes at the prescribed intervals, will they warrant your repair?
    That's my only dilemma.

I just get a receipt from Toyota for the OEM filter and auto store for the oil and keep it in the manual in the maintenance section. It's very common for people to do their own oil changes.
