Thanks wileyC! And Thanks CohbsTaco, exactly the info I was looking for, just some wood types! I have a pic of the "wood" periodic table, but it's unreadable. I've decided to go with red oak, and whatever this other wood is for accents.

Looks like white oak on top and walnut on bottom. Good choices. Post a photo of finished product.

...yep, oak and (if that's) walnut, are very nice and strong hardwoods... keep in mind that oak has large open pores, ..that considered, if you eventually want a super smooth finish you might consider using a pore filler before applying the finish.. ;)

My Uncle built first class furniture for Family members and my Aunt his whole life. About 4 or 5 years before he passed away he built his own coffin. It was made out of Cherry Oak the folding handles were made of wood also.

...made a plane till (..basically a wall-hung cabinet for storing bench planes), ...i designed it to store them vertically (rather than set back at an angle) to preserve space...

    ...this holds, ...from left-to-right:
    - #6 foreplane
    - #5 jackplane
    - bevel-up smoother
    - scrub plane
    - #7 jointer plane...

...notice there is one empty space, ...perhaps that is a lingering excuse to buy another plane?... but, which one should it be? :D

I'm looking for good designs to build a couple different things, since I don't have a lot of skill in design.

-Looking to build a nice like gun cabinet (glass front, locking, possibly lighting.) Not a huge one with drawers and what not below, something compact but can still hole 6-8 guns.

-Queen bed frame, love the rustic log style ones but they are crazy expensive and I don't have the skill to make that. Something close to it I can make simply with pine and stain it would be cool. Looked online a bit but cant find much that I'm really looking for.

-Also want to build a shelf for a shotglass collection. This would probably be easy to design but I was hoping to find a good design instead.

...before you start, you'll probably want to look at lots of pics (internet, magazines, etc.) to get a feel for what "style", or "styles" of furniture you like.. I do that a lot (browsing forums, blogs, etc), and I also have a subscription to Fine Woodworking, which comes w/ great photos of builds including exploded views/dimensions...

...there are numerous websites (youtube, blogs, forums, etc.) out there for free video content (I value this a great deal), to see how folks build, how they finish, mistakes, and of course "Ideas"...

...I think a great place to start is with "the Woodwhisperer", ..he has a very thorough site w/ gobs of free video content, as well as pics of projects submitted by followers... he's done a free video series on building a platform bed, ...probably multiple on shelves, ...not sure about a gun cabinet, but he's done many on all sorts of cabinets... he's predominantly a power-tool woodworker, so that's something to consider (he's got a lot of high $$$ equipment)... http://www.thewoodwhisperer.com/projects/all/?mode=archive&atid=2616&att=project&acat=2616&ap=

...others, like rob cosman, tom fidgen (unplugged woodworker), the renaissance woodworker, ..and others do many of these projects predonminantly w/ handtools, ...so the workflows and processes are quite a bit different than for that of power-tools/machines...

...research your styles, ...shop for "ideas", ...instruction (videos, magazines, etc.), and ....build!

...finished my saw till build (finally)... :D

    - carcass is poplar w/ through dovetails on corners, half lap dovetails on back rails and front rail (for handle rest)...
    - back boards are tongue/groove pine ("home center" grade)
    - accents (the saw kerf holder "thingys" and handle rest) are red oak...
    - finish is Danish oil, followed by scotch-brite rub...

Just getting to reading this thread - yess!! after a month of owning my taco finally I have found the wood thread!! (directed here by user scocar - thank you my friend)

Included are some construction pics of my boat (18 ft cedar strip canoe-style center hull of a sailing trimaran) and a table I made for my fiance, with her on top of it. There's so much more... but dumping photos would be a little tacky I suppose.

I live in Richmond, Va, and extend an open invitation for anyone on TW in the area to come by my woodshop, to chill or make something. I have a bandsaw, tablesaw, shopsmith (combo tool = lathe, drill press, disc sander), thickness planer that I can use as a jointer with a jig, a Roubo workbench that I built, and many many many handtools. PM me if interested!

edit - my shop is now much cleaner and more organized than in those photos
