While the 6 cyl. (and 4wd) would certainly be handy/fun at times, a realistic assessment of my future needs convinced me that mpg would be the most important consideration, so I went with the 4 cyl. 2wd; I have not regretted it.

Interesting topic. I just my 2010 Taco 2.7L and ordered a 2015 Taco Sport V6 4X4 which is scheduled to be built on Thursday of this week. I went with the V6 instead of the 4 cylinder because of the 4 wheel drive and I will be doing some towing with the new truck. I also think it will be easier to sell when the time comes as I heard a lot of commits from people who would have purchased my 2010 but wanted V6.

No regrets over getting the 4 cyl here. It has plenty of power in the correct gear.

I should have done the same. The A340 is about as reliable a transmission as you can get on any vehicle, and I'm not exactly a spirited driver so it would be a decent match. I only wish it still had the ECU PWR button like it did in the previous gen to adjust the shift points.

Now to figure out what to do with this one. How much money do I want to drop into a truck with this many miles... although the rest of the truck is not in bad shape-- a guy at work today asked me how I could afford a Toyota that's only a year or two old. I got a chuckle. Especially when I told him it was getting near 150k on the clock.

I tend to agree with this statement. The A340 is just about as dead nuts reliable as you can get. I guess my only complaint would be when you're being easy on it the trans seems to shift "stupidly". It upshifts way to early and then locks the converter immediately. I find it does better when I drive it a little more aggressively. I even manually shift it sometimes, the 2.7 does much better in the meat of the torque band.

I love my 2011 DC PreRunner with the 2.7L and 4 speed auto. But then consider where I live and what I use it for. I live in north Texas so I don't have to deal with hills. Even when I go hunting or camping I stick to ranch roads as the landowners really don't want me off-roading in their fields. Those ranch roads get really slick when it rains, and I'm tempted to put in an air locker because the "auto lsd" doesn't fill me with confidence. But I have to admit it's never let me down given the light off-pavement driving that I do. And it's great on the 5 or 6 hour highway drive to get to the lease.

Of course the vast majority of the time I simply commute around DFW metroplex with no cargo and usually just by myself or with a single passenger. I do use my truck for work, but I'm in the restaurant business. When I use it for catering jobs we prepare the food in house then use insulated roll-around cases that accommodates the food on serving trays (they slide into slots like shelves) and keeps it either hot or cold. They're not heavy, just bulky, and the five foot bed is more than adequate to load all the food we need even for a large event. And the double cab means I can take however many assistants I need in comfort. Also, it's nice not to have to clean up or air out the interior if the food spills. I can just hose out the bed. I've also used it to help friends move. Again, moving furniture that really isn't that heavy, just too bulky to fit inside an SUV.

Everything in life is a trade-off. There are occasions when I wish I had more power. But I've never actually needed it, it just would have been nice. Most of the time I'm satisfied with the power the 2.7 puts out even if I'm not thrilled with it. But then I've driven V6 Tacomas and they're not exactly rockets, either. If I was a contractor or a landscaper and had to haul around heavy gear or a trailer I'm sure I wouldn't like it. Same if I lived in the mountains. But for what I use it for, and for where I am, it's great.

18 mpg with 80% freeway driving is starting to make me wish I had a 4.0 or an F-150. My mods include 884 springs, Dakars, and 265/75/16s.

I'll bet anything it's your tires. Are they an all terrain and what load range are they and what is your average speed on the freeway?

When I put on all terrains in heavier load range I dropped 4 to 5 mpg and I went with 245-75-16.

I loved my 2.7 5speed AC 4x4, but when it got hit and I had the change to do it again, my frequent towing and hauling made me opt for the 4.0 6speed AC 4x4. There was something special about making that little 4banger scream merging on the interstate tho

I've only had my 2004 2.7 4X4 for a couple of months. So far I have no complaints. I don't tow with it although I might some day and although I do a lot of mountain driving I don't have any problem with the power. Weak as it may be. What I've found out is the 2.7 has to be revved if you want any power. After all, it's a 4cylinder. You're not going to be pulling tree stumps out at 1500rpm with it. Up above 4000 rpm it's actually not that bad.

The fact of the matter is that it's a utility vehicle for getting from point A to point B and driving around in the mountains, deserts or whatever you have nearby. It's not intended for the Rubicon, towing heavy stuff around, plowing through a foot of deep mud or traversing continents (although they are used for all that with modifications) or taking 2000 mile drives. I got this one because I wanted reliable transport in crappy, snowy weather and I wanted to get off the beaten path once in a while. That's what it was designed for.

I've got no complaints because I use it for what it was designed for.

I just bought my 2013 Double Cab 4 cylinder Tacoma.
I absolutely love it and looking to put a set of truck rims and tires on it. Any suggestions on what size rim or tire size to put on. The dealer put after market rims and tires on it but they are 15' rims with Michelin tires (P235 75R15)and the truck looks funny and low to the ground. Definitely not the look I'm going for my truck. I'm just a everyday driver and just looking to put a set on the truck to make it sit higher up. Any suggestions would help. Thanks guys.

No regrets with the purchase of the 4cyl Tacoma. So far it has performed flawlessly. Decent mpg and I am still able to tow my small lightweight camper with no problems. The V6 is nice, but I don't really need it for what I do.

The biggest reason I didn't go for the V6 has nothing to do with the gas mileage...the difference is really not that much at all. I can't stand the "high" suspension that all the V6 trucks have. Having to use a side step to get in and having to "slide" out of the truck...not for me. I like the low-level entry & exit of the base Tacoma...and there's no way to get that without getting the 2.7L.

Nope, longevity is why I searched out my 4cyl. Going for 300,000 easy.

The super functional 5-lugs just aren't tough enough for this crowd. It might snow, oh my!

I find the fender flares hideous myself.
