Wanted to say hello and thanks. I bought a 2015 DC TRD OR about 3 weeks ago and this forum is awesome. I already de-badged, removed the front mud flaps, added a catch can, extended the A/C line, added weathertechs, relocated the trailer plug, and did the diff breather mod. Can't wait for more.

Congrats, and good looking truck. I just got to ask though, what's the deal with this "oil-catch can" that is becoming an epidemic across internet. There are people that swear by it, and then there are the ones that say, don't these engines go 200-300 miles with no issues without a catch can?

Am I missing something? Does it add hp or mpg's on the 1GR? A friend of mine has a 2006 Sport 4x4 with 187k miles on it, and it runs great for a truck that is 100% stock with no can.

Not trying to start an argument, but I've seen these things become popular on other makes and models, but these are brands that are less reliable and have more complicated issues than our Tacoma's

The A/C line mod I get, that was the first thing I did to mine. I didn't like how the A/C condensation that drips from the firewall, falls right on a main wire loom and frame.

But the catch can mod, I'm in for replies.

First, only some of what you catch in a catch can is oil. Much of it is gasoline from blowby. Blowby is the reason for the PCV system. If we had no blowby, we would not need to vent the crankcase, as the pressure would remain static, more or less. The closed PCV system we run is for emissions. Prior to PCV systems, 20% of all Hydrocarbon emissions were from draft tube systems. Way to kill bunnies and cause smog, asshat. So you do need a PCV system. Why give the tree huggers more ammo against us by being negligent?

That said, there is no benefit in having the extra BS in your intake tract. There is a lot to lose. Extra unaccounted for HC's ( be it the oil or gas) poison your air charge, robbing power and efficiency. Why dont the OEM's put them on? Because your average car buyer never pops his hood. And they are horrible at getting routine service done, and most of them have their routine service done at Quik-E Lube or the local Wally mart by some high school drop out with a wrench. They aren't going to check a catch can, they can barely change the oil right. So it would be more costly in terms of service by the time that car shows up at the dealer for a warranty claim for a fucked up PCV system. A proper catch can will not cause pressure problems.

The very tiny amount of oil in the PCV vapor is more likely to cause carbon build up (bad) or detonation (also bad) than help seal the rings. Yeah, putting oil in the cylinder helps seal the rings for a wet compression test (which is used to confirm the diagnosis of bad rings), but that's a lot more oil, and a lot lower pressure. Under normal operation, that oil is going to get get burned, or blown past the rings, not help with the seal.

Excellent and detailed discription, but still doesn't answer why one is needed on an engine that is proven to exceed well over 200k miles requiring almost no or little repair (without an oil catch can) If we were talking about some of the newer direct injected European engines, or possible a 10 year old Ford or Chrysler perhaps.

And again, not knocking op for doing so, it's their investment after all. People laughed at me for wanting to get an oil analysis on my factory fill, which I know is overkill on a 1GR, I'm just a nerd like that.

I personally like the cheap extra insurance the catch can provides. Perhaps it is more for my own personal peace of mind but even after just 200 miles it picked up about an ounce of oil/gas. That oil/gas going back through the engine just doesn't do it for me.

I removed the front mud flaps because I don't like the way they look.

    More on the catch can:

    Diff Breather:

I can't find the link to the A/C mod but basically it stop the A/C vent from dripping right onto your frame.

Kinda like why people need bigger tires when the stock is fine or why people need suspension upgrades when the stock works fine as designed for 300k miles. I can go on forever.

I need the model that came with the tires that last 300K miles, perhaps I can find a take-off set in the classifieds
