Want more room and power, trading up to a double cab

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
I love my 2011 2.7 Tacoma with the 5 speed, but, truth be told after 3 years of daily driving it, I am SICK of shifting and have become quite annoyed with the 4 cylinder's gutlessness on the highway. Plus I have 4 big dogs and cramming them into the access cab isn't fun. So, I want a double cab V6 and automatic.

Would it be a better idea to trade my 11 in or sell it then go buy a double cab? Mine has 50k of highway miles, oil changed every 3,000 with Mobil 1 synthetic and it has never had a problem. The double cab must be 4x4, don't really care about the package but would like a TRD for the better interior and would like one with under 70k miles on the odometer so it's close to mine. Would I be able to trade mine directly across for one or will they try to screw me on a trade because it's a 4 cylinder 5 speed?

And the double cab I want! I love that dark blue or speedway blue.

Also, how solid is the automatic transmission in these things? Has anyone had problems with theirs? Any engine issues?

Why the little Ford Sporttrac box?

That's just some truck I grabbed off the internet. I don't really care if it's a long bed or short, if it's the right deal I will get it.

You may miss the space available in your current 6' bed, but that can be made up for be having room in the cab!!

Yeah, I don't worry much. Only time I haul something big is my quad which fits in my 6ft with the gate up, but, I don't mind having the gate down as long as it's strapped in good. I also have a 1997 Powerstroke with a long bed so if I really need bed space, I have that haha.

In that case I would make sure to look into and purchase one of the options for reinforced tailgates from our glorious forum. My tailgate is bowed really bad from the previous owner loading some sort of sport vehicle (Motorcycle or quad or other). I just look at it as theft protection ;)

You will be much better off financially if you sell yours yourself. And if you are looking at used trucks, you'll be better off to buy from an individual. You will get more for yours and pay less for the new one that way. Good luck!

    First of all this.

But in all seriousness you will save a few grand by selling yours privately and purchasing one privately. The auto trans is solid and the 4.0 is bullet proof. There is a group buy gathering now for the tailgate reinforcement which you should definitely consider if you're going to be loading your quad.

Just two weeks ago I was offered $7,000 for my mustang on trade. I sold it private party for $9,500. If you don't mind dealing with the hassle of selling your truck its a much better deal.

Is there much difference in performance between the AC 2.7 and DC 4.0? Seemed pretty close when I drove them. 4 dogs is definitely more.DC friendly.

Yes, my 4 banger can barely get out of it's own way, especially on hills and in a headwind, 45mph is about the top speed. I regretted not getting the 4.0 the day I got this and drove it over a mountain pass. It's a great, solid engine, but I live in Montana and it is very hilly here, a V6 is just more logical. The gas mileage is about the same too so I don't worry about that.

Yeah, that's what I figured. Will do that, it should sell this time of year with hunting season and all. We get a bunch of big rich outta staters that come here and buy trucks just to go hunting with, then they sell them when they leave.

Mine is a 4x4 too so it should sell easily. What should I ask for it do you guys think? It's in great shape and only has 50k miles.

Oh I know. My truck is a 2.7 auto DCSB Prerunner.

Just wasn't sure if the V6 would be night and day different.

I have a v6 dcsb and absolutely love it. My niece's fiance had a 2.7 reg cab manual and i had to use it a couple times to haul some stuff before i got mine, and that was proof enough that i wanted the 4.0 and not the 2.7. I have a rzr 900xp to pull as well and knew that it would be tough on the 2.7 to get that done.

If I was smart enough to buy a DC 2012 Tacoma with auto trans instead of the Access Cab with manual trans I probably would have kept it instead of getting an '05 Tundra. Thank goodness for the resale value on Tacomas. I only lost about $5k selling the Tacoma, which isn't too bad for buying new off the lot with two years of use and 30k miles.

It took me two months to sell the Tacoma after I bought the Tundra, had to wait for the right buyer to come along, best offer I had on a tradein was $22k.

I HAD a long bed, I now have a short bed.

I love the short bed a lot more. There's various reasons, but the fact that you have another truck thats long bed, means you should get a short bed. Otherwise it defeats the reason to have your 97 powerstroke.

The transmission and engine are solid, so no worries there. The V6 has enough power to keep you happy unless your expecting WOW kind of power.

You might want to consider adding a shell, with carpet on the floor, to your truck...and utilizing that as a home for your dogs and the interior of the truck would last longer. The shells that have sliding windows that open would be perfect...

Go to KBB.com or Edmunds.com, price it out for a private party sale in excellent condition and stick to that price. Somebody will come along that wants that model eventually, if you can stay patient.
