Okay so I have this clicking noise coming from what I think is the passenger front wheel area. One click per wheel revolution, but only when wheel spins forward, no clicks in reverse (I can replicate these clicks with the truck jacked up if I spin the wheel)

    Manual hubs work fine
    4WD works fine
    New front brakes

    No zip tie!

I thought it was a bad bearing, but diagnosed the hard to spin wheel as brake problems. Those have been replaced and the bearings were "checked out" and ruled okay by a local shop. :notsure: If it was a bearing I would expect the noise in both directions.

When my wheel bearing was bad it only made the noise turning left and going forward. Also check you cv axles

EDIT I would think a bearing is a whurring or humming noise, not an audible click.\

How did you diagnose your problem as the bearing?

And my CV boots are okay, but show signs of age.

This is my gut instinct too, is there an easy way to diagnose for sure?

I won't have the time to really tear it apart for a while...

If you grasp the CV shaft (after taking some weight off it) & check for excessive play (not in & out but back & forth) this might help narrow it down but most likely in the end it's going to be a tripod/tulip going out..

Yeah my wheel bearing was completely gone only thing holding it on was the cv axle nut. But to check it just jack the truck up and grab the tire at 6 & 12 and try to rock the tire. If it moves then its a bad wheel bearing. Mine literally had enough play that I thought my longest had came off. As for the CVs lock it into 4wd and see if it gets worse or quieter mine actually got quiet when it was locked in but Dougs method is the only other way other then taking it off and checking for play

I locked my hubs and left it in 2wd this morning and I didn't notice it, but I was bumping to the beats haha

On my way home I will pay closer attention to see if that changes the noise.

    Thanks for the help guys!

just to be thurough it wouldn't hurt to check for loose brake pads

my thought would be the cv joint is bad and the click is the spot is has play in it

I just did the entire front brakes so I can guarantee it isn't that. CV is my current hypothesis.

BTW hubs locked or unlocked = no difference. Which leads me to think bearings again...

On my 4Runner it made a whooop whoop whoop noise when I had a bad bearing. It would go away if I turned opposite of the wheel. For example, it was the drivers side that was making the noise, so if I made a gradual right turn the noise would go away when I put more load on the wheel with the bearing issue.

You said you just did the brakes - did the noise start right after that? Any vibration under braking to indicate runout in the rotor, possibly causing the pads to click? Make a video of the noise if you can, might help the keyboard techs in helping you out.

Since you can reproduce the noise with the truck stationary, use a long screw driver up against your ear to press against the hub and various parts while rotating the axle to see if you can pinpoint where the noise is coming from. Pull the caliper if you have to as well.

Ball joint. They click and pop when they go bad.

Get a long pry bar and pry up and down on the control arms and get them to move. Do this with pressure on the joints but not with tires on the ground. Put a jack under the LCA and then use the pry bar

In motion under load yes, but on jack stands this is not going to cause the noise he's chasing.

If it comes to a bad ball joint, it's hard to repeat the noise without moving the car itself but if you do that with the jack and pry bar, you can see if there excessive movement and if you really want to go crazy, remove the lower ball joint stuff and get it out of the knuckle and wiggle it.. If it's really loose, that's the problem.

Lower ball joints are brand new OEM. Also, those wouldn't create this noise while the suspension is stationery. All pro uniball UCAs are coming soon, but ball joints are not the problem.

Even if boots arent torn there could still be dry joint. Also the CV shaft grows & shrinks wrile driving

True, but if hubs are unlocked and I jack the truck up and spin the drivers side front wheel (only when forward, backwards is quiet) it clicks. CV shaft should not be making noises in this situation correct?

A normal functioning CV should'nt be clicking or any other unusual noises. Is the clicking there in 4x mode & if so is the noise more pronounced ??
