Congrats! Been hunting ruff for more than 40 years now  Just got back from the North Shore of Lake Superior hunting ruff for more than a week. Here is a pic from 2 years ago first time ever 1 shot 2 grouse. Didn't even see the lead one until it dropped.

Too bad your first one ruined the breast, it does happen especially on ruff grouse that are incoming and close. Had it happen to me on the first one I shot this year too. But there are enough others around Mn. ;)

Jim you HAVE to make that trip! I leave Saturday for 15 days in SD. The Toller isn't making the trip this year he is getting too old so the English Setter is going. There is a handful of us Retired Military all branches that get together each year and rent a house. We do pretty well most days, feel like a kid before Christmas right now waiting for Saturday.

IIRC you hunt Vizsla's? Good friend hunts the close cousin, Wine's. Here is Hedi being left behind while Steve works the younger one. Obviously she is not happy about it!

Another good vest is the WingWorks Vest. With so much barbed wire where I hunt SD though I normally just use a traditional vest there and use the WW vest in the woods.

Pchop a few years ago I was in SD and told a friend that I had been to 49 States, only missing ND. John and I took the Coral Sea around the world in 83. Next day he said lets give the dogs a day off to rest and we drove over to the river. He explained SD phez road hunting to me and said when you see a rooster just get out and shoot 'em as soon as you get out. Right before dark I saw one next to the road and he pulled over. I couldn't bring myself to ground sluice it so started walking up to it and then saw another, and another. All of a sudden more than 50 roosters filled the sky right on top of me. I flock shot, first time since a kid, and didn't hit a single one. I walked back to the truck with my head down and John said well you entered the ranks of road hunter like most welcome to the club. 15 minutes later I took this picture

Interrupted Friday's pumpkin carving date night to carve some deer haha.

Doubled my furthest shot on a deer to 310 yards. Caught him bedded down in a field. Pretty stoked to have my deer tag filled after striking out on my elk tag!

Not sure if this will work. Never tried posting a video. Had a doe within about 15 yards yesterday evening. Of course, doe day is tomorrow.

She had 2 friends with her that stayed back in some thick pines. Never could get a clear view of them to see what they were.

Anyone ever use "Ever Calm"? That's what she's smelling. Supposed to keep the deer calm by smelling like a "bedding area" or somethin like that. I don't know. Figured I'd give it a shot. She never did really freak out. Just casually strolled through.

I'll save you from the pic but I'm sitting in an outhouse right now after scouting using a propane lantern for warmth. Have a wide 8 point that looks promising.

Recently spent two weeks in Colorado, family took me up to Vega for an afternoon of fishing. We went from Jeans and T-shirts to bundled up and freezing our asses off.

After learning that the little tugs were nothing like the fish here in PA, I soon discovered these tiny Jerks like to take your bait and run with it. Right under a rock.

Didn't take long, none of us caught our limit, but we did get a decent string of some Rainbow Trout. And by decent I mean my stomach was pretty happy the next night.

Yeah, should be pretty close. The taxidermist is an SCI scorer, so he was going to throw a tape on him today and let me know. Then after the drying period we're going to get him officially scored and put into NV books.

Shot a good buck about 7:30 this morning. At least a 7, maybe an 8. He was running a doe. I hit him pretty good...maybe slightly back, but a good hit. We searched for him for 5 hours. No clue where he went. We found tons of blood. Then...suddenly nothing. Searched for over 2 hours after we found the last drop of blood. :( He ran around the backside of a mountain then down onto an old logging road. The last spec of blood we saw was jumping down off the logging road. Just disappeared.

I have a winching question for you guys. I am looking to put a winch point inside the bed of my and other family trucks for our elk season. Every year we get elk that we drag in to the back of the truck whole after gutting of course. I know most would quarter and skin but we find you protect the meat more and have less dried jerky type meat that gets trimmed off at the packing plant this way. Mostly laziness but in the warmer hunting days getting them to the butcher quicker is way better this way. Wondering where is the best place to put a D-ring or attachment?

At the moment we use a buddys razer and winch them diagonally into a long bed full size pickup bed from the front. Kind of up and over the bed rail using a spectra winch line. We can load a full cow elk (meat hunters) in about 2 minutes this way and often need to load and transport 2-3 cow elk.

I won't be mounting a winch in the bed but would like the option of using a small ATV winch once a year for a week....suggestions???

If there is already a thread on this topic, I would welcome the link.
