Hmm, I've never seen those. The ones we had were literally logs. They were about 4" in diameter and 14" long. I would break off a few 2" pieces and lay them right on top of the news paper for kindling.

    Yeah, no kidding.
After last winter the demand for seasoned firewood is huge, and nobody's got any supply because they sold it all last winter. Everything being advertised as 'seasoned' is, at best, six months old.

Good solid reminder of why I generally either scrounge my wood or buy tree length. Buying tree length runs me $800 for between 8-10 cord.

Hell, I burned up about $75 worth of white ash for a backyard fire at those prices. My wood is probably not as seasoned as the Canuck's, but I'm splitting for next year right now. Cords going at $125 in my area based on a sign I saw at a farm supply store last weekend...split & delivered. I think the log truckloads are around $500. "Seasoned" is most assuredly a relative term.

So who brings it inside for you? :)

I deal with back issues as well, though no majors such as you have. Oddly enough, the wood procurement process this year actually improved my issues....thus far anyways.

I'm not surprised to see firewood priced cheaper in coal country. Just seems logical that there'd be less demand for wood down that way.

Yeah, you can get softwood for around $180-$200 here as well, but I don't like burning fir because it doesn't burn all day or all night. Hardwoods like Oak or Maple I can load the stove in the morning and still have a deep bed of coals in the evening when I get home from work, 11 or 12 hours later. When I burn softwoods the soapstone's still throwing heat, but it's down to just ashes.

Yep even here in the woods a cord is going for $300 + dumped in your door yard. Green not a whole lot less. Year old fire wood is just about gone not many providers have any left. I used to sell fire wood and pretty much got out it a hell of a lot of work for $300. I cut my own now and some to give away to those that can't afford to heat their houses here in town. The wood under the deck is at least a year cut some two years cut and most likely I will not burn it all this year. It's 6X8X20 the deck is an "L"

Lit the cellar monster last night because they were forecasting temps in the upper 20's overnight in my area. Turned out to be a mistake; it never got below freezing and I woke up around 2AM sweating like a pig. I had kicked all of the blankets off and my side of the bed was soaked. I was just idling the stove along on a low burn, but it was too much since the temps outside weren't below freezing. Went out into the kitchen and got a drink of water and the thermostat read 81 degrees. Opened the window in the bedroom and went back to sleep. Woke up this morning to a much more comfortable 70 degrees inside.

I think you jinxed me. Liner should've been here by now but still no sign and no tracking info.

Liner showed up today. Plan is to install it tomorrow after work if it's not raining.

Right now I have an open traditional fireplace and I'm looking to add an insert so that a fire will actually heat my home, instead of making it colder. I'm debating between gas and wood burning, but leaning toward natural gas with all of the no burn days here and the added connivance. Anyone have any experience with adding a gas insert, or is there any reason why I should not get one?

Because pellets are better, cheaper, renewable resource. If done correctly you'll be able to heat your whole house with just a pellet burning insert:thumbsup:

Well I got my wood stove all finished up last night. Getting the liner through the chimney proved to be more difficult than I expected. I was getting really pissed at whoever built it and got a lot of mortar squeeze out on the inside of the chimney.

In the end it probably only took about an hour to Drop the liner through the chimney, seal and cap the top, install the T snout, hook up the stove pipe, and cement the hole in the chimney where to T comes through.

I built a fire in it to test the seals for leaks and man it's nice. It's in the basement so I dragged an old couch over in front of it and just enjoyed it.

Tonight I'm going to build a fire when I get home from work and use a thermometer to take some readings through out the house over the course of 8 hours and see how effective it is.

Hopefully my inspections go well, I don't see anything they could possibly have an issue with.

Finally lit my first fire for the year. It hasn't been cold enough inside to do it yet. I've owned my home for 30 years. This past summer I had the siding ripped off, installed new windows, OSB sheathing added, Tyvek wrapped the beaver barf (OSB), added 1/2 inch foiled foam board, finished with full core (has foam on the back) vinyl siding. Wow what a difference in temperature retention and sound reduction.

While I love burning a nice fire to warm my house in the winter, I think I'll only need about 1 cord this year instead of 2. I had to open the bedroom window at night because it got too hot inside.
