Going to be buying a 4 Runner in February for the wife. I have never ordered a vehicle before...always just bought off the lot. When I place the order in February will I need a deposit....if so how much? I'm going to be putting 20k down on the truck....but don't want the dealer to know this until I get a price for the 4 runner and interest rate negotiated. How should I attack this?

Thanks...would this be better than joining a dedicated 4Runner site?

I just put a deposit down on a 2015 of $500 after we came to agreement on total price last week.

This is the 3rd time that I have ordered a truck and it's always been $500.

No, it's a cash deal, but you can negotiate interest rates with them also.

Check your bank first, that will give you a starting point. You can usually do that online with your bank and they will email you a quote that is good for 90 days.

Then use that as a bargaining chip with your dealer for lower rates or match.

I had to put 1k down as a deposit on mine. I used Edmonds to get a price from a bunch of local dealerships and then sent the lowest bid to the other dealerships to see if anyone could beat it. Ended up getting a pretty good deal that way.

I used edmunds also, the deal that I got was what Edmunds says most people pay in my region. Which was about 800 lower than msrp

Thanks guys...I do disagree though about telling them I will be putting down 20k until AFTER I NEGOTIATE: Finale truck price and interest rate. Here is why....

They may be more willing to give me a lower price on the truck thinking they will make it up on the total financing amount....most people don't put 20k down on a vehical..so they may be expecting me to only put down a few grand....plus I only put down 1k when I bought from the salesman 5 years ago (my tacoma) I will be working with the same guy...so I have a history with this dealer that I can use to my advantage. I'm 33 years young so the 20k down will be my ace in the hole..hopefully they are not expecting me to come to the table with that large a down payment....

    Hopefully it goes like this....

They agree to close to a true car total price....we negotiate dealer and delivery fees...maybe I get better tires and wheels who knows and agree to pay those fees....maybe I get nothing extra and they wave those fees who knows....then...they decide to give a little and settle on a price and maybe some upgrades thinking I will only put a small amount down (like I did in the past). At this point they agree to an interest rate.....and they are thinking I'll be financing maybe around 35k at the least....we agree on an interest rate.....and then I hit them with the fact that I'm putting 20k down and only financing 20k...at this point they can't go back on the price/upgrades/interest rate we decided on..am I crazy with this logic?

I have a construction company , technically it owns my truck . I still had $12K in payments after that too

Just tried truecar. I too am looking at a 4Runner for the wife.
This is for a 2015 imited 4x2 but we want a 2015 trail edition runner.
Pretty sure it'll be quite a bit more $$$$ than a limited 4x2

I did a "dealer preference" on my 2014 4Runner. I was not actually able to "order" the exact unit I wanted. I ended up having a dealer trade done for the closest match and they had the running boards removed. I didn't have to leave any deposit to have the dealer trade accomplished.

That said, I don't agree with telling them it's a cash deal. There's plenty of money to be made in F&I... In fact, they may charge you less for the purchase price if they think they can get you in F&I.

I used to sell Toyotas as well. I was able to dip into the total of the 3% dealer hold back as well.
