I got a 99 3.4l taco and was needing to know if the length of the plug matters when installing. I installed new plug wires after reinstalling the engine and it runs horrible at an idle. It sounds like its not hitting on all cylinders strong fuel smell and backfires back thru the air intake. Dang nearly blew the box cover off  I have all harness plugged up except for one single wire plug that is directly behind the intake manifold. Gray plug with one yellow/red wire. Any ideas???

Firing order of plug wires is correct? Not sure what the wire you are talking about is. You cant plug that in?

Was this wire bought as a set? I'm thinking since you have "short" wires, they may be in the wrong location.

I would double check your plug wire locations first. I am not at my truck right now to see if I have that wire. IF you could post a pic of that wire/plug that would help.

Looks like the wire to the coolant temp sensor for the gauge. If you look down from the rear you'll see a single wire sensor on the housing that the heater hose is connected to. That should not effect how it runs. Sounds like you have the firing order wrong

I just want to add for anyone blew it like I did and just pulled all the wires off without measuring first, if you use this awesome diagram and count how many plugs away the the corresponding plug is that will tell you the longest, middle and shortest wires.
Ie: 3-6 is 4 plugs (the longest)
    5-2 is 3 plugs (middle)
    1-4 is 2 plugs (shortest)
I don't know if this is technically correct but it worked for me with no issues! Good luck
