So the other night, I went to start the truck, and it started, but died immediately. After that, it would crank, but not start. Sprayed some ether and it would run as long as you kept spraying, so definitely a fuel problem. I took my dad's car to go get a can of gas just to make sure I didn't run out of gas, because my fuel gauge does not work. When I got back, I saw that my dad had undone a fuel line to see if the fuel was spraying or not. I took the tail light relay and put it where the fuel relay goes and started it up, no problem. Okay, $9 plug and play issue, right? Wrong.
When my dad undid the fuel line, he stripped the nut on it so bad that even vice grips weren't able to hold it. So the line had to be cut.
I figured it wasn't too big of a deal. I could just buy a new fuel line and connector. Wrong. Only people around here with the right parts is the dealership. And they want $135 for it. I can't afford that, so I'm trying to rig something up.
My question to y'all is can I simply run a rubber hose and clamps, (part of it is already rubber hose) or is there too much pressure running through the line for that? What would you guys suggest?

yep just unscrew the nut but don't cut the line, you want the flare on it to give the hose something to hold onto for added security.

since you are doing this you may as well do my fuel filter relocation mod while you are at it and then you wont have issues trying to access the fuel filter under the manifold which may be your problem. see it here: http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/1s...diy-2-4l-2-7l-fuel-filter-relocation-mod.html

you can just cut the rubber line at the base of the fitting and slip it over the fuel line and clamp it on

well its a good idea to replace the fuel filter if it has more the 75k miles on it so that's why I suggested you just do the mod now and have it all done at once. even though its running the filter is probably still restricted and because of where it is and how hard it is to replace it never gets replaced so I bet yours is the one that came with the truck from the factory.

when I replaced mine at 120k miles, after I dumped the gas out and set it aside, it had brownish sludge seeping out the inlet side like syrup. you would be surprised just how dirty the fuel is that comes out of the gas pump into your tank and gets trapped in the filter.

dont forget that its a high pressure line, so not sure how long the rubber one would last, make sure to use at least fuel line and it should be ok.

The filter only has 11k on it. I replaced it when I rebuilt the engine.
It is the rubber fuel line they sell at Advance. Part of the original fuel line was rubber hose anyways. Anyone else done this before?

so you got a new filter, that's good

its fine, the original line was crimped on. you just want to be sure to use a good quality reinforced fuel line (you see the string reinforcement threads inside it) with a good fuel line rated clamp and not a cheap regular rubber hose is all he was saying.

10-4, yeah, it's good stuff. Even used a flair tool and flared out the two pieces of hard line before putting the line and clamps on do that there's even less of a chance of an end popping off. The clamp will stop up against that instead of just popping off.

There's specific fuel line for fuel injected vehicles. It costs a little more than the regular fuel line.

    Hope everything works out.

Drove around the neighborhood twice earlier after making the fix and plugging in that relay. Truck ran great, I was very happy. Well shit an hour ago, when I was on my way home from my best friend's house, which is a few blocks away, the truck shut off. Coasted to within half a block of my house and then pushed it the rest of the way. I fuckin give up for tonight. The fuel line is intact, no leaks, so my guess is it's the relay again. I think there must be something else wrong causing it to kill the relay. I'll figure it out tomorrow. Hopefully. I'm just more than a bit fed up and stressed right now, can't catch a break on anything lately.

The relay? It was like nine bucks. You can get the universal relays. That's what was in the truck when I got it. I got the same kind of relay in where my taillights relay goes.

Nah, I've got the money to get that. Glad it isn't any more expensive, though.

with a come and go problem like that my bet would be the power wire to the pump is chaffed and grounding out somewhere, look for places it touches and moves around.

assuming that is, that the relay is the right size to carry the amperage of the pump. seeing as how they are aftermarket relays I think its worth trying a factory relay first

So... today I tested the system all the way back, making sure everything was getting power. Had power all the way back to the pump. So guess what the problem is?
The damn fuel pump went out. That sumbitch is practically new! I put it in when I rebuilt the engine just under 11k ago. Stinkin piece of aftermarket crap. So now I get to spend about $80 (not including shipping) to get one from RockAuto. I'm gonna save up for the Denso one, because Toyotas like Denso. They have a couple others for cheaper, but that's what I bought last time, and you see how long it lasted.

You are far from the first to have non Denso pumps fail. Get the Denso "kit" with pick up screen. It comes with the short hose, grommets and clamps. The clamps have cool little clips that hold them open while you maneuver the pump into place. The screen has also been upgraded to more of a filter and the old nylon screens do get brittle and break.

So... It wasn't the pump itself, it was the wires directly connected to it. Hooked pump to a battery, and it spun. Checked all of the wires, and all the ends were extremely corroded. Cleaned em up and slapped it back in the truck. And I even cleaned the ends of the wires in the fuel sending unit, so now I have a working fuel gauge!
But now I'm having new problems with the truck. :/
