Looking for a new battery as my current is on its way out. Friend was saying get the optima red top as it has much better cranking power. Looked it up as battery 35 but when I look it up it says it doesn't fit the 2012s. Am I looking up the wrong one?

Also any recommendations of a different type with strong cranking?

The RED top Optima batteries aren't nearly as impressive as the YELLOW top.

I've owned both. The Red top battery that we owned, didn't last any longer or worked any better than a standard battery off the shelves. I think ours died after 3 years.

The Yellow top battery we owned was on our Jeep (offroad rig). Although it didn't see many miles.... it sat in the garage a lot. It never lost charge and fired up everytime. It handled using the winch many many many times. It lasted much longer than 3 years...and we sold the jeep with the YT in it.

Have you priced a Toyota battery? I replaced my original OEM battery after 5 years - and it was still good. I figured I was on borrowed time. Toyota battery that I have now, has an awesome warranty ( I just can't remember what that is...replaced it 3 years ago).

But wait..... ARe you still under warranty? Your current OEM battery probably has a 6 year warranty on it.... I'd contact the dealer and get another one!!!

Many years ago I "Blew Up" the Acid battery in my FJ 40 while in Moab. Got an Optima Red top....lasted about 2 years, got it replaced, lasted about 2 years, they finally had me pay to upgrade to a Yellow Top....lasted about 3 years....went back to the old acid type from Auto Zone and it has been in there for about 5 years now. Unless you have a specific reason to go away from the old type battery, I would not recommend the Optimas! Lots of dollars and at least for me, not such good life. I won an Oddesy that will go in the new Taco, will have to see how that works out, though they seem to have a better track record than the Optimas. Also note, for some reason the Red Tops have a better warranty than the yellow top.

You do realize that there are maybe three battery manufactures in the US that make all the batteries? There are hundreds of brand names but only 3 major players.
