went in for new tires on saterday , they had them in stock
he came out checked tread depth ,said there still legal, an if it were his tires ,to run them 5000 to 7000 miles more
so it looks like the good old Duratracks are going to hit 70,000 miles :D here is a pic with 63000 on them still have good sipeing

depending on where OP lives winter might not be an issue. How about letting him be an adult and make his own decisions.

I had around 60k miles on my first set of duratracs. Still plenty of tread but I sold them on craigslist for $250 to put towards my new set :)

I like them too, but I always like to have at least 65-75% going into winter months. Tires are cheap insurance when considering your life & family.

Just inspected wife's car a few days ago, her tires are at least 50% for a 2 year old car, I could technically get another year or 20K miles out of them, but I'm going to replace them in a week or so anyway out of piece of mind.

The siping on Duratracs don't extend to full tread depth. If your area only gets deep, dry powder, the tires might perform acceptably (the same way a mud tire churns through deep snow). For rain/slush/ice you should replace those tires.

In my area, around this time of the year, the dealers and tire shops get stupid busy thanks to all the people coming in to install snow tires. I wonder if that Discount Tire store may have had other motivations besides saving you money (i.e. overbooked and can't accommodate you, but don't want to lose your business, etc.)

I had around 60K on my Duratracs this time last year and decided to run them through the winter before getting new ones. No problems at all. Mine looked fairly similar to the pic above.
I am located maybe 10 miles south of the OP.

I would run them. I don't think winter is a huge issue in Utah. If you in Buffalo NY then I would definitely change them. They have already received 6ft of snow.

I am a big believer in running good tires. I think good tires are probably the most important safety issue in your vehicle (aside from your own driving habits). I would not run them in winter but would save these for summer or try to sell them for a couple hundred bucks. I find there are always people willing to buy worn out 10 ply tires for junker trucks.

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
They would get you around a lot better than what most people have up here...and they're studdable which is even better. Good on discount tire and you for taking care of them!

Living in UT myself, I'd be inclined to keep the tires for the winter if he's just on normal roads. If he's a ski/board bum and up the canyon every weekend, then I'd be more inclined to replace them. Or other winter hard duty.

But for most of what he'll drive on pavement in the Salt Lake Valley, my opinion is they're fine for winter.
