I will be there, but for sure press photos will be out long before I can get pictures. It will be like watching a horror movie as a kid, I expect- head turned away and squinty eyes. More plastic, more tech, less truck I'm betting.

    I'm simultaneously enthusiastic and scared.

Enthusiastic because the engines desperately need an upgrade to modernity. Scared because I'm worried there will be yet more non-disable-able electronic safety measure bullshit.

How would you like to fuck with proximity sensors and auto-braking that can't be turned off while operating off-road?

I'm also concerned they'll follow the continual trend of US vehicles and make the thing fatter than it already is. It's basically a full-sized half-ton from the 90s in its current incarnation. What's next?

If it's got a boxed ladder frame, KDSS, manual xfer case lever and a diesel I'll consider trading in my girl.

Hopefully this means they're not building a larger cheesier truck like the chebys.

Toyota North America CEO Jim Lentz told The Detroit News during the Los Angeles Auto Show last month that he doesn't see the Colorado and Canyon attracting the same type of buyer as the Tacoma, which he described as a largely male buyer looking for a small, sporty pickup.

"I think they're going more at what they view the mainstream segment to be based on their full-size truck experience," he said. "I think we're actually going to probably attract very different buyers in that segment."

I'm still waiting for my frame to be replaced. I will have all those new parts, plus new shocks, and new wheels and tires in spring. I am excited to see the new tacoma, but I don't think I will be getting one anytime soon. I like only having 1 car payment.

    Any thoughts on drivetrains?

With the 4.0 all but dead now that it's no longer avail in the Tundra and the FJ is being retired, we will see the 3.5?

Will the 4 cylinder being replaced with the 2.5 with direct injection?

I know there's been talk about the turbo, but Toyota is just too conservative to take a swing at that just yet. I would also guess that if they intend to make generation 3 a global truck, the tried and true 2.5/3.5 pair might be the way to go until a midcycle refresh.

I've also heard Chevy say things like "we expect a CRV or RAV4 buyer to cross shop the Colorado" which to me is one of the most insane assessments of the market I have ever heard.

I like that they bring it to Detroit to tell Chevy to shove it. I'm guessing Chevy will have a big setup with the Colorado trying to brag it up, so Toyota can give them the fuck you right back.

The 4.0 isn't dead, the dual vvt-i 1GR was installed on the 2010+ FJC and 4Runner and the 4Runner is still going. It's rated at more power, more torque and better fuel efficiency than the one in the Tacoma

Toyota recently did a refresh on the 4Runner. They like to do aesthetic updates and then slip in new powertrains so people don't say things like, "never buy a first year model because of potential problems."

I don't think, even with the 4runner, the 4.0 is set to live a much longer life. I could be wrong though.

20% tint on the front windows. 8-15-13 Installed Icons front and rear with Dakars. 2012 4Runner wheels with 275/70/17 BFG T/A KO2's. Weather Tech mats front and back. Leer shell with Leer Locker and roof racks.
A friend of mine is the owner at a Northern CA dealership and earlier this year he was in Vegas for a national meeting in which they were shown pictures of the new Tacoma. He said they were not allowed to take any pictures but told me it has a more aggressive front end, is a little wider and longer with 2 new engine options with more HP and better fuel ecomony. I cannot wait the see it as I would be very interested in one.

3.5 L is going to have a lot of weight to move around if it goes into the 4Runner.

The version of the 3.5 in the GS produces 307 HP and 277 ft lb of torque. The only thing holding back the 3.5 is a computer program.
