Many of us have changed our rims with no TPMS installed. When not installed, you get an annoying warning light that comes on your dash alerting you your tires are not properly inflated. Even though they are, the computer senses no psi because there's no sensors. By putting the 4 stock sensors into a pressurized little pipe and leaving it on board somewhere (in my storage in the bed), the computer picks it up and turns the light off. An alternative to putting tape over the light or rewiring it.

I built a pipe bomb using the directions on this thread.
Neatly stored under the seat, and no problems. Light out, and haven't had to add air to it yet. Works perfect.

Just to update this post: When I had my DC2 wheels and tires done, the tire company installed my existing TPMS sensors ( From the steel wheels) into my new wheels no problem. They work fine. People don't need to deal with using new TPMS sensors if they change out wheels. They may use a rebuild kit to do it, (not expensive) There is some mis-information regarding the TPMS sensors and new wheels floating around. It really is no big deal. And NO, I have not been visited by the ATF !!! (Yet)

This thread makes A LOT more sense now that it is explained that it is NOT AN ACTUAL PIPE BOMB!!!
Wish I had seen this before I did my new rims/tires and purchased new TPMS and paid the stealership to program! Eff my luck!

Note: maybe a new title is needed for this thread. Mods??? No TPMS light with new rims?

Any problems with these things bursting? Would threaded ends be more secure than the cements ones?

The pipe is rated way higher than the tire pressure you would fill it to

This is BA! Never heard or thought of that. Any reason you wouldnt just put the TPMS sensors in the new/aftermarket wheels(other than they are a PAIN in the winter)? Dont you need to put the spare tire in there too?

I have both summer and winter tires on two sets of rims. The pipe bomb was the perfect thing for that. No TPMS in the spare on mine, but I would assume you could just leave it in the spare as long as it's carrying the same amount of air pressure as the tires on the vehicle.

The angles on some wheel sensors are different. For my 2010, the steel wheels had sensors that wouldn't work for the OR wheels I changed to.

that is the reason i made a pipe bomb for my truck back in 2011. all the sensors are in there packed in bubble wrap.

Why do you have to reset the TPMS computer when you do this? Same sensors... just moving them right?

Just sold my 09 with a pipe bomb containing the TPMS sensors tucked under the seat, I ran 2 sets of rims and tires and that worked out well.
Now here's the question: On a 2018 with the sensors set for each wheel, can 4 smaller pipe bombs be assembled and 1 sensor be placed in each one, then place one under the front drivers seat, one under the front pass. seat, and the other two either in the back corners of the cab or in the pockets in the bed, anyone try this???

Just pull the valve stem core. Then replace of course when ready to pressurize.

I agree. I guess if the light goes off you'd need to follow the reset procedure, but otherwise...........

Using your theory of position, you could never rotate tires w/o having the TPMS re-registered. Seems pretty impractical.

I'd still put all 4 in one container.

Remember these are battery powered. Someday (7-10 yrs?) that battery will fail, and then you'll have to decide what to do next.

They wouldn't be in the tires when I rotate them, they would be in the same position and same sequence all the time in the manner I mentioned. I would also mark them as for which wheel and tire they came out of and position them accordingly in the truck, don't know if that would work though. Since they are programed for LF, RF. LR, RR, I don't know if putting them all in one container would work, it might.
Just thinking, all in one container might work like before, I would be overriding what they are meant to do but that's ok as long as they are sending a signal that keeps the light on the dash from being displayed. If I have this right, the only reason they would need to be reset is because once the tires are rotated they would tell you that the wrong tire is low on air pressure.
SOMEONE must have done this, or at least tried it!

Why do that? The 4 sensors are to see your actual psi per tire. No sense in doing 4 separate ones just to trick a light when you get the same effects from one tube.

    You miss the point.

When they are in the tire on the vehicle, you rotate tires, right? Meaning you move the position/corner the sensor is on.

So how does it 'know' it moved positions?

    It's why I said

What does your owners manual say in reference to the TPMS and tire rotations. That will be your clue.
