So I have a slight whine coming from the engine for about a week. A few days ago I had to tow a tandem trailer with some construction trash. Not sure how much the trailer weighted but the taco pulled it fine. Now the taco has some rubber burning smell from the engine and rough idle/slight vibration as I am slowing down to a stop. No CEL's. So is it the idle pulley, alternator, or what else can it be? I had to leave the taco broken since I had to go out of town. Will be back tomorrow to start trouble shooting. Hope you guys can point me in the right direction. Thanks!

This is what i had to tow across town:

Probably a pulley, but it could be that the belt is worn. How many miles do you have on this belt? I've had them let go in 50,000 miles before...

I hope I didn't kill the taco by exceeding the tow rating. The engine whine was before I towed/hauled anything. I wanted to keep my taco forever so hopefully its something minor.

I am at 113K on all original belts and coolant. Only thing I've done is 10K OCI(synthetic), 60K tranny (OEM) and rear differential (synthetic) drain+refill

I'd start by popping the belt off and spinning all the pulleys by hand - feel for roughness, stiffness, and listen for noise as you spin them.

Ok thanx guys will try that when I get back. Scared it was the oil pump failure that a member on here had which destroyed the engine.

Nah, I'll bet it's a pulley seized up and it's eating up the belt. Bring a 12mm and 14mm wrench!

Maybe a bearing or something was rubbing when towing. Nice wheels btw I have them too ;-)

Had a slight whine from the engine before towing anything, thought it was the alternator going out. But after the tow the engine is idling a little rough when slowing to a stop. So probably a pulley going bad and belt melting. I like the wheels too. Thinking of removing the center caps for a more aggressive look. Maybe even plastic dip them black- but too many peeps doing that now and days so maybe not. I have a few mods to make the taco more functional and purdy- just been so busy to do it right now.

Ok pulled off the serpentine belt and all the pulleys that are suppose to spin freely are. Is it correct that the 2 idle pulleys and tensioner pulley are the only pulleys that are suppose to spin freely? So I dunno what to look at next. Any ideas? Probably going to replace the two idle pulleys and serpentine belt anyways due to age. Hopefully that will take care of this issue. But does anyone have any ideas if it could be anything else?

I would just do the belt first. That may solve your problem. Others with more knowledge may recommend doing all the pulleys too, though.

Also the serpentine belt looks in great shape- no noticable wear.

So I ended up just replacing the tensioner pulley and belt. Only think is I don't remember the belt sitting so far back on the tensioner pulley. Can u guys confirm I have it correct?

Something else is still amiss with the engine. Making a weird noise. Time to take it to the mechanic. Can't have my truck down too long trying to figure what is wrong. My MS3 isn't cutting as a work truck.

My ac compressor froze up and made a horrible burning rubber smell. If you use the defrost the ac compressor will run even in winter with the heat on. Just a thought.

I don't have burnt rubber smell anymore . Instead I have a metal tin kind of noise. Engine is idling fine, no more roughness. I don't feel comfortable driving it, don't want to make more damage.

So it turned out to be the driveline vibration issue on top of the pulley issue, had my mechanic replace the all worn pieces. Runs like new again! Saw the stupid TSB but I am way out of 60months and 60K warranty as my is a 2007 and 115K-dumb TSB.

Crazy when more than one problem pops up at the same time. It tends to led you on a wild goose chase since you think it's just one issue and it's actually two separate issues.
