No, you don't need one, you just want one..lol. Thats cool though. I just bought a 1st gen TRD. And I'm sure it will look very pretty under my hood..lol. Plus I do a lot of side work for a guy that owns a machine shop and acrylic shop, when I'm off during the summer and winter months, so I figure he could cut me out a couple cool covers for it.

Sometimes. Most manufacturers post the gains of where the highest difference is in the graph. Which isn't always at the peak. Always look at the graph and see where the difference is made.

My opinion... I like the Volant CAI with the dry filter and ram air scoop with my TRD catback exhaust. My truck is faster in the 2700 thru 4500 rpm range (or more fun to drive), sounds much cooler and yes, looks cleaner than the factory intake. I have seen a small increase in mpg from 18's to 19s after 3 full tanks since the install. Nothing very scientific in my measurements but I plan on getting the truck dyno'ed before any more mod's and will post the numbers to compare against the stock.

Never thought about taking off the engine vanity cover. I wish somebody made a part that would fit in the part where the stock air filter was. So it didn't look like part of the engine was missing

While new to this forum I fully realize that CAI typically do nothing. However in regards to engine bays in which have a SC this particular type setup I believe "looks nice" and displays / cleans up much of what's hidden by the stock plastic shrouding etc.

The AFE stg2 has no (leaning out) issues with SC nor any requirement for tuning past what Toyota flashes the ecu with for the TRD SC?

    Does the Volant run lean?

Has it thrown or does it throw CEL's?

    And is it CARB legal?

Hey Guys, i know that this forum that i started is one of a lot of debate, but i did end up getting one, i went with the K&N 77 series CAI kit. Im attaching a picture of it installed, which wasnt hard at all to install. i love the sound that it gives off around 3500 RPM, i did have a question though, does anyone know if it is supposed to give off a ricer hum around 1900 RPM? or is something loose and vibrating on my intake? i dont know...

Bad choice of intake IMO. Not a fan of the hot air intake. It's either afe stage 2, urd cai, or the airaid cai. Btw what is a ricer hum?

Mine's a Volant too. I've never gotten any error codes from mine. Just make sure you don't over-oil your filter and you'll be fine :)
I also have seen the same increases in mpg but its nothing to be jumping up and down for. I like the sound of it over the k&n personally. But my last vehicle was a poopy 2.4L Dodge Avenger that hunted for gears for what felt (and sounded) like forever.
