Added a winch and the current charging system is seriously struggling with it.
The winch is super slow, i had the same style winch on my old cherokee that had a 150 amp alternator swap and it definantly pulled 2-3 times faster.
I found this write up on pirate

    http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/toyota-tacoma/889276-3rz-alternator-upgrade.html

The swap looks easy enough, all the local parts chain stores have it but its only 105 amp.
I found this 200 amp version on ebay for roughly the same price so im thinking of going this route.
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/200-Amp-NEW...89|Model:Corvette&hash=item51c6d12dd2&vxp=mtr

Anyone on here ever done the swap before?
The company are specialists in starter /alternator rebuilding and they have a phone number listed on their ebay page. I was thinking about asking if they could fit a stock toyota pulley to this alternator, the gm one thats on it seems to work but has an extra rib on the pulley.

check your wiring on the winch, as when winching most of that power is coming from the battery not the alt. as that winch is pulling 400+amps at full pull.

Its wired up to the battery just like its supposed to be, battery seem good.
I found a wrecked 89 vette on cl locally. Guy said he would take $35 for the alternator so im planning on going this route. Plan on using the extra $$ saved to add a 2nd junk yard battery, bigger wire to the batteries from the alternator and mount the winch solenoid under the hood.
Thinking I can do all this for around $100 if I buy the used alternator off of cl.

Winch speed won't be affected by your alternator, the pull (as above) is straight from the battery. If the battery is good but the winch is slow there is an issue between the 2. Your alt upgrade will recharge the battery faster but will probably only give you an extra 10-20 seconds of pull before the battery is drained. You'll also need to upgrade the wiring between the alt and the battery, factory wiring will go up in smoke if you start putting twice or better the amps through it.

And if the winch is brand new, it may have a problem in it. Try jumping another battery to yours and see if the speed improves. I've had the same brand winches on 2-3 vehicles before I put one on my taco, speed is the same on all of them. My f250 has a bigger battery so it pulls longer, otherwise no difference.

Put in a diehard platinum 31M instead. My winch flies.

well I'm thinking I may have gotten screwed on this winch then because it is pulling slow- I know xrc8's are slow but this is really really slow..
yeah I know a high amp alternator is no good for factory wiring I just picked up 25 feet of number 2 welding cable today, I have about 10 feet at the house as well so I'm going to hit up the junkyard tomorrow and try to find a second battery I'm going to run them both in series which is how I had it set up on my old jeep with a winch seemed to work pretty good I'm thinking I'm just killing my battery before the alternator can even think about charging it My lights get super dim after 2 seconds.
the battery seems to do fine for everything except for the winch I even have an aftermarket stereo with a sub &amp has no trouble keeping up with it.

There are a couple mods you can do to the XRC's to help them out, check out this thread for some good write-ups on replacing the factory grease and resealing the winch if you haven't seen it already. Replace your drum anchor with a hardened fastener as well or you'll be in for a nasty surprise one day.

As far as line speed, the higher the amperage of the battery you're using, the faster (up to a point) your line speed will be. I use an Optima blue top with 750 CCA, most starting batteries are around 650, which is the minimum for an 8k winch.

I knew about the grease, I done that on my last one actually just picked up two tubes of red grease to swap it over, didn't know anything about the anchor.
I was thinking my battery was a little small to be running on a winch I think it's like 650 cold cranking amps or something I got a 850 cold cranking amp battery in my Tundra I think I'll just swap out the two.

I bought the vette alt from cl. Its a newer reman so hopefully it works good for a while.
    Some pics of the install

I ended up crimping these in my vice then taking a center punch and making two divits on each side of the terminal since i didnt have anything hot enough to solder them with.

Then had to split and trim the fuse box for the bigger #2 wiring.

Got a new one of these, had one the neighbor gave me that turned out was bad. He said he bought it a advance auto a few years ago. Took it back there under his name and it wasnt quite 3 years so they gave me a brand new one..

Had to make a new battery hold down since I was using ratchet strap previously

    1218140102a_zpsuj6bjtur_2155124f397aa41a4881dc11149de7dfdadc9c88.jpg
All i had was some 3/16 plate laying around so its pretty beefy for a battery hold down.

Pretty much back together, still have to figure out how im going to route everthing but everything is working a-ok.
Heres a shot of the mess I need to organize now.

I added some new marine grade battery terminals as well.
Got less than a benjamin in all of it.

was there any mods/fab required to install the gm alt. On the 4 banger? I thought about doin this when my alt died a few months ago but couldn't find any info on 4 banger installs, only on the 3.4l so ended up just replacing the original.

    Nothing to speak of really.
On the alt to engine block mounting bracket you have to remove it from the vehicle, theres a spacer in it that has to be removed- grind about 1/16 of an inch off then install it on the front side instead of the back to move the gm alt forward.
Also have to space the backside of the alt forward about 1/4" as well as the adjustment bracket, install the gm pigtail to the toyota one and replace your current 60 amp alt fuse with a 120 and your done.
Id suggest doing the big 3 mod with it
