I am competing in a 5 month long WWII bolt-action, open sights military surplus rifle match - you fire, scan and submit your targets (up to two targets a month) - and needed to get one in for December. Since I am shooting on the Soviet Team, I can use an M91/30 Mosin Nagant or a Finnish M39 - both are 7.62X54r caliber.

I grabbed my Finn M39 for today. While the barrel is dated 1944, the receiver ...was made in 1895 by the Chatellerault Arms Factory in France under contract by the Russians. As such, the rifle actually is classified as an antique and requires no paperwork to own or sell. For me, though, I carry it on my Curios and Relics records anyway.

Not a great score but I haven't fired this rifle - less than 5 rounds before today - and I now have a better sense of how it shoots. Hopefully, I will get out next week and fire another record target.

Word. My receiver is stamped 1928, with a barrel from 1944. Kinda odd ball, but could have been used in the war!

If the Finns didn't, the Soviets did. The M39s are all built from captured Soviet M91/30s - they took the best receivers and put on new barrels, lumber, etc. They only kept rifles that shot extremely accurately.

I decided to go out again this morning - this time I took out one of my Mosin Nagants - a 1925 Tula. I scored a bit higher - might just be a factor of spending more time driving the rifle or even the surplus ammo. This will be my record score for December.
