Finally got some progress made today, wanted to have the sails built before taking the doors apart for the 3" and 6.75"s I want to put in there.

No idea why the images are rotated there - they're oriented properly on my end.

Here's where I stopped for the afternoon - I went to open up my fiberglass resin to find it had gone bad. Had to go get some more.

Where did you aim your cups? Is the off-axis response of your tweeters that good?

this looks great! what material did you use for that? what adhesive did you use to stick it to the plastic?

Hard to tell from the pics, but they're not too far off axis, and are pretty much on axis with the factory tweeter orientation. Plus the tweets I'm using have the swiveling feature for fine tuning, but the off axis response is pretty good.

They're going to be crossed initally up around 5K, but I'm going to experiment with letting the 3" play up to about 9K once I go active.

For material I was planning on using grille cloth to keep it thin and light. Unfortunately I've moved since the last time I used my stash, and I couldn't find it, so I sacrificed an old cotton t shirt. That approach has worked fine for me in the past for smaller stuff like this. I used good old 3M 77 spray adhesive. I'll glass it 1 coat first and then see if I want to do another once it cures. I'm using Evercoat resin and lightweight filler.

Nice work, man. On my last set I just built them up with body filler all the way around but I think I'll go this route on my next ones. Especially since I'm putting my 3 inch mids AND 1.3" tweeters on the sail panel.

I'll be interested in how well the sail stays attached if you're just using the factory clips - seems like they easily fell off when I was removing them today. I was going to figure out how to beef up the retention some when I'm ready for them to go back in.

I almost went the route of doing A-pillar pods for the 3" and tweet - but really didn't like the placement I was seeing in my head without interfering with the grab handle.

my tweeters are to big and to heavy to fit into my sails :( the tweeter is at least 2 inch in diameter and the mounting ring is about 3 inch.

Should still fit, you'll just have to build it up a lot more and get creative with reinforcing the panel mounts.

Yeah, I'm going to add to the panel itself and how it mounts. Won't be doing this for a while, though. I'm getting the truck to look the way I want before I start spending tons of money and time on the stereo.

Hey OP any updated pics? I'm asking because I have a set of Pioneer TS-S062 PRS mid range speakers that I'm thinking would go great in that location. They are 2 5/8 inches in diameter, how much depth is there to work with there?
    Thanks

Hey - sorry for no updates - lot of life has gotten in the way, and I haven't even gotten these sanded yet. I might make it happen this afternoon.

What you see here are designed to house a Rockford FNQ series tweet that measures 1 & 15/16"overall diameter on the flush mount cup, and need a mounting hole 1.75" diameter, with a depth for the tweet assembly of 5/8".

The depth was one important reason for doing the mods to these sail panels, cause there is a structure in the door that would prevent the tweet mounting directly into the panel itself. There's really only about .25" of clearance there, so you'll have to build in any depth you need to fit your driver. Also as you can see from the hole I put in the original panel, there's not a lot of extra room to fit a mounting ring/cup with a flange on it and keep it within the stock panels width. If you're bumping up to a 2.625" total diameter tweet - you'll need to build some extra width into the overall assembly.

BTW - I've heard very good things about those Stage 4 speakers. I considered a pair briefly to run full range in the stock door location, but price was a drawback.

I decided to give the Dayton RS75 3" a go in there. Hoping to get it all done soon.

Ok cool that's what I figured judging from the pics. I got the stage 4 because I heard good things about them , but also Crutchfield threw in those for free when you purchased the C172PRS set as well.
Hoping the amp gets here soon, the wait is killing me!
Thank you for the reply, I know to well life gets in the way.

I don't see any way of making tweeters fit flush there - in the pics with just the hole cut in the sail panels, you can see the metal structure of the door frame is only like 1/8" behind it. If low profile is your approach, I'd go with the tweets in upper factory location behind the door panel.
