heres a couple that are missing. needed for front diff removal.

    10mm allen
    12mm allen
    E14 interior torque

    also good to have:

    dead blow hammer
    5lb sledge hammer
    pry bar

and maybe update the 35mm axle nut socket to 35/36 because either one works. i forget which size socket i have, but sears carries one size and not the other

    I'm somewhere in the middle.
Decent set of general tools and supplies is fine for general driving.

But the take everything mindset can be a headache.
    Where do you stop?
    Oxy-Acet set, 20-ton press,...a lathe? Spare engine?

There are certainly times for that approach.
Traveling Pros, being way in the boonies, extended trips.

But I don't want to take 600lbs and 20 grand in tools every time I run for milk.

Five pound sledge? I have 4 pound hand drill hammer, 4 pound engineers hammer, and sledges in the following sizes 6, 8, 10, 12, and 16. A 20 would complete the set, but it would be a bear to swing for too long.

I think a 4lb hand drill hammer would be just about right and easy to swing in tight places. On the other hand, a 2lb ball peen has been in my tool kit since about day 1.

As for tools on the road, I carry a hilift, 20' of 3/8 logging chain, recovery strap, screwdrives, water pump pliers, dykes, needlenose and cresent wrench. The rollway stays at home. The last time I needed a tool from the truck it was for a stuck file cabinet at work...

Certainly there are limits to that concept. However as a pro-wheeler I learned that as you build your truck, and your wheeling group, you have to build your gear to go with it. Basic trail rides typically require basic tools, however there are times when if you DO have the gear, it is a good idea to bring it. Case-in-point, several years ago my trail rig was a decent-built 1987 Pathfinder. I had a full oxy-acetelyne kit, and a portable welder kit.

I got teased a bit when we were out on the weekend runs in Ocala National Forest for always bringing all this stuff on the trail. One time a guy got a little crazy and ended up bending both of his inner tie rods. We were well off the beaten path, and it would have taken several hours to drive into town and hope that the parts stores not only had the parts, but the special tool needed to replace the inner tie rods. This essentially would have ruined the who day.

Fortunately I was able to break out the oxy-kit, remove the inner boots, lay out the welding blanket, and heat the tie rods, one at a time, while we strapped the truck to a tree on one side, and a winch pulled from the other. Took about 45 minutes and we had him field-repaired enough to get him home. So we parked his truck and the rest of us were able to finish an enjoyable day while he rode with a friend.

Obviously you can't carry for every single possible failure, but when it comes to TOOLS, you can't bring too many of them. Especially when you wheel with more than just Toyota trucks.

Yea a portable welder like the ready welder for like $600 seems like it could be a life saver.

Plugs are 5/8th. also need long 12" extension for plug change. I would also advise the allen wrench for the tranny check plug

Depending on your needs, either a Pickle Fork, or one of those big Screwdriver type things with the wide end that is bent (not sure of the name, but you can pry, scrape etc with them). For long trips I also agree with the RediWelder...our club bought one and we also take at least one on every BAJA trip...the welder gets used often enough to include it. For misc. stuff other than the normal tape, wire etc, a pack of the two part epoxy putty is a life saver in many areas.

I have to laugh because I just updated my old emt pack again. (I do it every six months.)
I have a 6-pack of O2 tanks, 3 separate regulators and masks, IV kits, 6 different bp cuffs(handy to control some types of bleeding), gowns, masks, gloves, blankets, knives, flashlights, and enough other assorted junk to open a small clinic.
No narcs for any junkies reading this out there. I turned my kit back in so as not to worry about it.

What is funny is I don't even work ems anymore.
But having that stuff with me is my security blanket.
