Any newbie forest roads in CT?

I'm looking for some very easy dirt roads to figure out what the hell I'm doing. I'm new to 4x4 and pretty new to CT. I'd like to find some dirt back roads where I can go slow and get used to how the truck feels on dirt. If the view is nice even better. I could tie it into a camping trip or just a day trip to check things out.

I've read that CT doesn't have much in terms of trails, but I think I'm probably looking for something more like a fire access road.

Any ideas?

 

I still haven't found anything around me in CT. I'm thinking I'm going to have to plan some camping trips out to VT or NH to find some forest roads. I'm still hoping to find something easy so I can learn how to use the 4x4 without breaking anything.

 

Hey I hope you've found something by now but I know Nepaug State Forest is a good time. its between canton and Torrington on rt 202. Its legal on all the roads, however anything into the powerlines isnt and they frequently re-block the trails. I think DEP comes through some times. Mostly mild driving, good place to get some mud on the tires on a stock ride, but there are some serious hill climbs as well. Good number of roads, you can easily spend a few hours in there.

Jump over here, there's usually some good stuff. Seems like a lot go to the pine barrens in NJ

 

Marcoc, Do you know any good spots in southern NH? I moved up there from CT last year and I'm looking for a few nearby spots to get a little mud on the tires.

 

Check out exploring new hampshire forums. There are a metric fuck ton of class IV roads in NH.

 

Haha Thanks for the heads up that sounds awesome. Seems like I got to find a meet up ride for them to let me into the secret club though.. I'll work on that. Is there a group of TW members on there?

 

There are a bunch in the NE area that attend their events.

 

I drove out there this week and they have it all blocked off and gated. Maybe they just close it for the Winter, but it looked like new construction.

 

I saw that too when I was at my parents over Christmas. It's never had gates before they must have just installed them. My hope is that it is just closed winter and "mud season". It's state forest so they can't just close it

 

They had signage posted all over.







The logs looked very recently added and blocked a side access to the main trail. There were also massive concrete blocks behind them.

 

They really shut that place down!! That sucks, nepaug was my back yard growing up. Still a ton of mountain biking trails in there.
