was thinking of some ideas for a DIY RTT. i can't afford the pre made ones and still need to make a bed rack for the truck. here is an idea for the bed rack i drew up, but wondering how everyone attached there's to the side rails of the bed.

also for my idea, has anyone used a easy up? just make a platform and then bolt the easy up on the corners, and don't extend it all the way. then somehow take the extra material and attach it to the bottom side of the platform.i think the easy up below would be a good one, bc it has the window and door.

anyone seen this before, or tried it and can tell me why it would be a bad idea?

HAven't seen it before but I wouldn't put a RTT on the side rails of the bed.

I see what you are saying. I thought you were referring to the tie down rails on the inside of the bed. Yes you are correct.

ok good, i was starting to worry and have to rethink everything i was trying to do

just trying to figure out how they did mount that, so it is strong enough and will hold everything

I have a feeling that if you price out ALL the materials you'll need you will be very close to, or possibly exceed the $1000 I spent on my RTT. I wouldn't attempt it.

yea no offense intended but i think thats a bad idea. just buy a ground tent or save up till you can afford a RTT. the quality is worth it.

and for the bed rack, a lot of people use angle iron which sits on the bed rails and bolts to the track system. 2.5" angle seems to work.

I agree with this. Every time I've taken a shortcut to save some money I've spent more trying to make it right.

Unless you have access to some steel such to build it for cheap then build it up and post pictures!

Not putting down creativity and wanting to do it yourself but research costs and calculate 10% for screw ups and revisions.

I would lower the bed rack. Mines 13" tall which puts the main body of the RTT about 2" above the cab. Much higher and you run the risk of ripping it off when you're off camber in gulches and such. ad4f8c7ed388948a978488fe57c17466_ef9355ba8d8ede120cd00db50368d29ba1315125.jpgd0d5d1186791c29cdca31b86f9b24b38_b3ef3caeebd7e0277da86b47184a87465e170923.jpgab4703f65092617536620c9694881373_4c9ea97d0de72e0674e4954e33826351d58c5836.jpg

Thanks for all the input guys. I think I might just save up for a actual RTT. for now I think I'm just gonna build a plywood platform and put a ground tent on top. A poor mans RTT.
