I put 265/75-16 without trimming anything
Then went to 255/85-16 (33" tire) with some trimming

Some guys have 35"-36" tires with QUITE A BIT OF TRIMMING

I know we are all new at some point. But it should be mandatory that all introduce themselves and then have stickies in the Introduce yourself thread for all these questions that have been asked a trillion times. And also somehow show them how to use the search function.

hey there redneckprincess. i seen someone had told you that they had went with a 255 tire and said that it is a 33in tire. i have a 2.5in lift on my 07 tacoma with 285/75/16 tires which equals out to a 33/11.50/16...... with your 09 tacoma and with a 3in lift, the biggest that id go with is about a 295/75, which is a little bigger than a 33in tire. its not to big or to small. trust me on my judgment bc i am a certified automotive tech and i do lifts on trucks all the time. i hope that this can help you out alot. good luck with your decisions and your lift and tires.

Yes thank you! That's what i was thinking because i know 285's are bout the same as 33's. My uncle had 295's on his jeep that he only had on for maybe a month then upgraded to 37's so he said if they'll work I can have them.

You will have to trim your inner fender liner remove the front mud flaps possibly trim fender flare and maybe do a cab mount chop depending on what you are using the truck for. Wheels will need to have at the most 4.5in back spacing to clear the ucas with 285 and up tires

I ran 285-65-18 with a 3 inch lift and had no problems. You could also go 285-70-17. You can probably go bigger but i never had any problems with either tire size

As you can tell from the replies, the is no one answer. Another approach is to just ask the 2nd genners with a 3" lift what tires/rims they are running and what mods they had to do, then you could pick from objective scenarios.

So, I just went from 255/85r16 (nothing but a 3" lift and no rubbing anywhere) to 35x12.5r17... I have cut almost all of the cab mount off, I will be buying McNeil fenders as I don't want to cut the almost 2" out of the wheel opening that I need. Also need to regear-coming soon with 5.29's (yes, I know 4.88's will work, but buy once cry once...) Not to mention all the welding of gussets for the lower control arms and spindle from Marlin Crawler as well as new octagon cam bolts and full send on the alignment to get the wheel off the frame at full lock. Also full viper cut to the front lower section of the bumper. 37's are a HUGE commitment and not one to take lightly as the truck will need substantial modification beyond what I have had to do to get 35's to sort of not rub. Although... if its a mall crawler, you might be able to live without a good chunk of this work.

Do you think a 35/10.5 would need to cut a bunch of fender?

Not sure-that was the way I was originally going but the deal on the 12.5's was DEEP. I think you are still going to have some rubbing up on top for sure, but can't say if it will be as bad as what I now have. Mine rip the fend flair/moldings off at full stuff... Only up front though, the back clears fine (although I have cut the lower section in back off and I am not running mud flaps anywhere.)

I have a 3" lift and run 285/75/17 on FJ steel rims. They rub the mudflaps sometimes. If I took the truck off-road they would rub more.

So even with the 10.5's your going to hit the cab mount. Here is a view of my first round of cutting down there. Lower part of fender had to go as well as the molding. Pinch weld was flattened and there was a fair amount of beating the firewall in. Friend with a 3rd gen on the 10.5's had to do this as well.

    original cut.jpg

First real stuff tore the molding off. Tire has poke and fender is two inches too low. You will have the height, but not the width, so maybe okay . Still have some places up in the top of the wheel inner fender area that will rub.

    stuff damage.jpg

I have been refining and cutting for a while now. I am all the way to the bolts that hold the cab mount on and have cut the full end of it off. Fenders are back at least another inch at the bottom, but no longer hit. Still get the cab mount at full stuff and 3/4 turn. Needed to move LCA's all the way forward with alignment cams to get wheel off frame at full lock and proper toe adjustment. This is a big deal to go this large... Looks sexy though!
