So I really like the looks of the expedition style bed racks, but only ever need to carry a kayak, if even that. I was considering making a rack out of pvc simply for the cost aspect, and the fact that I can't weld! Just wondering what some of you guys thought about it, could I still use it to carry the kayak, maybe a roof basket or something? I also thought it might be useful for camping until I have enough money for a camper shell. I've scoured the internet for ideas, and if this has been done, it's never been posted as far as I can tell, so if anyone has pics that would be helpful also. Thanks guys!

I've done a mod or two
It is certainly giving me ideas right now. Maybe a trip to home depot is in order to scope out possible parts.

Sounds possible as long as you don't load it down with anything too heavy.

*Just make sure to paint it black ;)

Oh it will definitely be black!

I was actually thinking about filling it with that spray foam stuff, just in case I needed to haul something heavier.

That seems like a really good deal on a rack, for 18000 you'd think if find it from that guy on eBay!

I built an A-frame out of pvc to put a tarp over for camping. Worked out pretty well.I don't know that I would reccomend putting a kayak on a pvc rack though...doesn't seem it would be strong enough

To carry one yak, just get a hitch and a bed extender and carry it in the bed. Unless you are wheeling some where that the bed extender length gets you in trouble (possible) there's no need to go high with it.

The bed extender can be very useful for many other things as well, such as long lumber and pipe items from the local supply house.

You can rig up to carry two yaks in the bed as well, cheap and easy. See post #976 for a sample.

How about ABS instead of PVC? It's thicker and black already.

I actually just went and looked at the abs, it is a little more expensive, but seems like a good option.
As far as building homeless folks houses out of cereal boxes, seems like they'd still get wet when it rained, but on the bright side they would have something to eat in the cheese. I agree, my idea may seem weird or even useless, and it may be, but as I said in the original post, I like the looks of the expedition racks, but don't really want to spend $300 on one that I'm not going to use. So why not get something that looks cool to me, and put just a little more into it just in case I want it functional.

    :woot:

Nothing wrong with your idea at all my friend. In fact, My wife and I have seen many functional pfc bike bed racks in Moab in the past. So, I am sure you are on to something:thumbsup:

Agreed on the ABS plastic idea. Stronger then PVC and naturally black. Readily available at your local hardware stores.

This thread as my wheels turning now too. Hmm.

... sat on this all day, but seriously, what is your issue with DoorDing's post? It is helpful to the Op's purpose and thoughtfully composed; I don't get why you felt the need to lash out like that. Do you need to talk to someone?

    Short version -- Wat Dafuq?

    Agreed.

Really people. I'm a plumber by trade, well experienced with pvc, abs, and schedule 40 & 80 pipe. While it might hold the weight vertically, I know you have to stop and start. How are you going to mount it to the truck? Any real perpendicular load with the leverage of the kayak on top will snap said pipe at the base. Masive triangulation would be required to keep things from breaking. Just a small jolt should do it.
