Been doing research on the Scan Gauge 2 and it looks like it will do what I need. I have found a few apps for iPhone and was wondering if they are as capable as the Scan Gauge? The apps are less expensive even with buying the WiFi adapter.

Using the Scan gauge gives a dedicated item, always connected, calibrated and never with the hassle of the phone connection (wifi, bluetooth, etc) every time you get in the vehicle. A hard wire connection always wins in my book. Plus a phone serves too many other purposes, maps, calls, etc. while driving or as a passenger.

I prefer the Scan Gauge. Permanent install and easy to change screens and such. Too much crap on the phone already!

I just got the dash command app to use. Still waiting for the wifi unit to be delivered, so I can't comment on its actual function, but playing around with the app, it looks impressive. I have an iPod that always stays in the truck so I'm hoping I like it. Even if I don't, I only have 25$ invested so no big deal.

    My 2 cents.

The iPhone App - known as Torque is fine for "static" work. By that I simply mean hooking it to a dongle and then the DLC3 connector(OBD-II port) for analysis at that point in time. Great for determining transmission fluid temp and many other values. There is a free version which does not provide transmission fluid temp and a paid for version which does. Last time I looked it was around $5.

The down-side to the phone App is it will drain an Androids battery very quickly. Hook it up and drive down the road for however long the charged phone battery will last. On a positive note, the Phone App is cheaper. If all you want is something to check conditions on occasion or when a check egine light occurs, the Phone App might be your choice.

For Dynamic or real-time reporting, the ScanGauge or UltraGauge would be the way to go. If you tow a lot, you would be able to monitor transmission fluid temp and other values throughout the life of your journey. Down-side is cost.

Is Torque available for iphone now ? It used to be android only

I think I'm going with the scangauge 2. I'll probably mount it off my rear view mirror as well.

Ultra Gauge. Half the price of a Scangauge and a better looking screen.

Luse: how do you like the ultra gauge? I had a scan gauge I in my Escape hybrid and sold it with the vehicle. The ultra screens look better and according to what I've seen, easier to navigate. 7 (56 gauges) pages of gauges looks pretty good. Thoughts?

I got mine second hand from a member here. Had a chance to pick up for cheap so I went for it. I thought it would just be a novelty after a while but I find myself using it every day. Would buy again.

Depending on where you mount it the big difference between Scan and Ultra (other than $$$) is the location of the buttons. Scan on front, ultra on back. My mount location required front access so I got the Scan Gauge.
