I decided to go with a little healthier sound on my '09 and asked at the local shop what an aftermarket muffler would cost me. The mechanic tells me the Tacoma has too sharp a bend rear of the stock muffler location to merely do a swap out with a Flowmaster or Magnaflow. He says the only way to do it right is to get Flowmasters (or whoever's) cat back kit which includes a newly designed tail pipe. Then he mentions a ball park figure of $700. Does this sound right? Can one not simply cut out the old and put in a new and leave the tail pipe stock?

When I had my Flowmasters installed, the shop just modified the rear section of pipe, between the final sharp bend and the muffler. I would visit another shop if this one can't see that that is possible.

v6 or 4 cyl? I did Gibson catback on my 4cyl and love it. Bolt on plug n play.

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Gibson-Dual-Extreme-Exhaust-System-for-05-12-Toyota-Tacoma-Access-Cab-18804-/331288199360?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Year%3A2008%7CMake%3AToyota%7CModel%3ATacoma%7CSubmodel%3ABase%7CEngine+-+Liter_Display%3A2.7L&hash=item4d2250c0c0&vxp=mtr

They have ss or aluminized versions for any cab/engine/bed configuration. Nice deep rumble. No drone just nice tone. Not crazy loud or raspy. Bolts up right where oem was using oem hangers. Easy very worthwhile & no $700 crap either.

And yes, you can get just a muffler with offset inlet/outlet and same diameter inlet/outlet and have it welded in place or you can buy a catback and just bolt it in yourself and either have oem to go back on if you sell truck or sell the oem and make the new one cheaper.

Shop is full of BS, I've had a Magnaflow and Borla drop-in just welded up in the same spot as the stocker. Just need a center/offset muffler and a bit of extension pipe. Last time it cost me $60 to get one welded in.

Yup....they're full of BS. I paid $40 labor to direct swap a Flowmaster in. Which I later took back off.

can't believe they would have the nerve to lie right in your face like that.

any muffler shop will be able to throw in most any muffler you buy for around $50 labor. cost of a muffler will vary, but most are under $100. You could also buy a full catback for around $400 and throw it on pretty easily. it's literally two bolts.

I just put on the Borla Cat back exhaust system. It took no longer than 30 mins to install. Jegs.com has it for around $500 shipped and it is a bolt on system. Looks and sounds great.

I swapped my stock muffler for a 50 series flowmaster and then had the shop dump my exhaust right at the rear axle. Find a new shop.

I put a 10 series on mine, which is way smaller than stock... they cut and weld it with some extra piping.

Yup, shop "A" (general mechanic) is is definitely full of crap. Called shop "B" (mufflers only) and they quoted $150 for a Flowmaster installed.
