Whats up guys, so i don't have a Tacoma or even a Toyota haha. But this seemed like the best forum to find out info about the off-roading scene near HILO, HI (NOT MOVING TO OAHU ANYMORE). Im from Slo, CA but am planning on going to college there after this summer... and i REALLY want to take my truck with me haha.

I was curious as to what the island has to offer for my Long Travel Colorado. I know the 4x4 scene is prevalent there, but what about prerunners?

Also wondering what type of preparation I need to do on the truck to get it ready for that climate, or if it is even that big of a difference. Im right by the beach in California and hit the dunes regularly, so I'm somewhat knowledgable about the rust already.

Hopefully i could hook up with you guys someday cause I definitely want to be a part of the off road community there! The only concern i have is my truck sticking out like a sore thumb and on top of that im not a native.

Thanks for the input in advance guys!

good lord, i looked into the recon thing and i have a ton of things that raise flags for me: i have 35s and 17" wheels, no mud flaps, tires stick out past fenders, suspension is not DOT certified, and alignment is off. Would hate to ship it over and find out that my suspension isn't even legal. any thoughts on that?

yeah when i was there i saw a ton of lifted trucks! i know they don't do smog in hawaii, but the safety thing looked pretty intense. the biggest thing is that my suspension isn't DOT certified so I'm hoping someone can chime in. but yeah ill definitely call and ask about it.

ive had 4 different rangers haha, so i kind of wanted something different that nobody had long traveled yet. i like my colorado cause its a 4 cylinder 5 speed manual (good mpg and nice using the 5 speed in the sand) plus i like the look of them when they are done up. so far she's treated me pretty good :D

thanks brotha, yeah its built by Dirt Designs. Essentially the same kit that my buddy @tacokid09 (idk how you tag people on here haha) has on his single cab taco he just sold. Cycles 15" of travel with a 8" coilover.

Just wondering, what makes a ranger the best Lt truck?

I used to build my rangers because long travel parts are super abundant (less expensive) for rangers. And i think he may be referring to the i beam setup the old rangers have because you can pull good travel numbers with them.
