I got hired as an Android developer and they ended up using my other skills as well. Not bad since I demanded a higher pay, knowing that was going to be the case.

Alwaaays take that into consideration unless you get are getting eyed by a major corporation. :D

Any recommendations on car alarms? What do I need to look for in them?

Don't put anything of significant value in your truck, carry a gun and install a hidden starter kill

I'm putting audio in soon and no two ways about that. Gun won't protect me when I'm not around the truck. I'm manual, that already scares away most people.

Almost all alarms are made by ads technologies. Cliffwood, Viper all the name brands all come from the same place so it's really just about what type of features you want and how much you want to pay for

Do you have a suggestion or is there a right up about starter kill switch? I need something simple and don't want a full alarm system that could potentially strand me off road when it freaks out later.

    Thanks

No, but I have the FSM for our trucks. Could be something worth the research.

Find the wire that sends the signal to the starter, add a switch. You can really pick anything you want that will stop a truck from starting. I've seen some creative stuff in my days. One of the best was the guy wired his started to a switch but the switch jumped to a relay that went to the horn. So if the switch was on and you tried to start the car, the horn just goes off.

In one of my Civic's I wired up a bunch of 3 way switches in a row and they had to be in a specific combo for it to work. It was hokey but it worked great until I forgot the combo. I used to keep the switch under the hood to make it more complicated but its also annoying to have to open the hood all the time.

I have the full service manual for our trucks. Shouldn't be hard finding an important wire to wire up to a switch. If we come up with something good/cheap/easy we could even sell them as kits.

It's directed technologies, not ADS. Not sure why I said ADS.. Though I still am in bed right now so maybe that's it. :D

Either way, Viper has always been good to me. Clifford is my back up. Python I stay away from.

i mean besides that, you can get a bluetooth monitor interface thingy installed too. and have a more clean way to get to it instead of having and exterior bracket holding up a massive tablet.

just my 2cents..maybe i should post in a more generalized subforum..

Nobody on TW has tried this yet. Though you can find tons of devices that are the same size as the iPad mini and I'm sure mod one of the dash kits to make it work. There is a lot more that needs to happen behind the dash to make it right. You'll need power converter and LOC for sure.

I don't do fab work for the most part but if you can find a dash kit that it will fit into, I can wire it up.

We used to install them at a shop I worked at back in the 90's but they weren't very popular. Everyone had a hard on for Viper back then so I'm not really sure if compustar is good or not these days.

If I had the actual tablet in hand I would do it..

The hard part about android tablets is that there are soo many different sizes so a bracket I make for a Samsung might not work for an Acer. :(

Unless of course there's enough room for the bracket to be adjustable. I guess if I want to go that far I'd have to really invest in some stereo cradles and double din's for f-ups while developing a solution. That's all before figuring out a wiring solution.

As for power some might think you could use a lighter-to-usb for power, but when in fact usb just doesn't have to voltage needed for covering the charging + drain from use. So yea you'd need a converter for dc.

    As for other connections:
-you could enhance the signal if someone chooses a 3g/4g tablet solution by using the radio antenna connection (possibly)
-sound: most tablets have a headphone jack that could work and you could split the audio into different channels if needed
-mic: tablets are getting more and more sophisticated with voice commands so having a mic that picks up sound well would be nice. long wire needed (not a biggie probably)
-volume up/down would need be relocated and forget wiring to steering wheels..I'd have NO idea what to do there.
-power switch would need to be relocated. One might say use a bypass switch from the dc line, but most tablets need to be pushed to "on" when they lose power.

all in all when I think about it, it's a lot of friggin work. :(
