These systems do have shortcomings ( snow, ice ) and are not perfect. However thinking that a human can outperform VSC or ABS has been proven to be absolute bull shit over and over again. Even the best human response time is snail like in comparison.

No you cannot outperform these systems, regardless of how much you would like to or think that you can.

However , it is also true that ABS INCREASES stopping distances on loose traction surfaces like gravel and snow , on snow in particular , I would rather make do without ABS just like in the old days

Just wondering who is running M/T tires or something relatively aggressive and has switched to snow tires in the winter if it helps or not? I'm running M/T's and have been considering a fit for purpose snow tire, but if it's not going to help......

He's talking about the skid marks he left in his shorts after the ABS kicked in.

I've yet to drive anything that can predict the slide before it happens, and I've always begun correcting before these systems kick in, which will then drag me and whatever I happen to be driving in the direction I don't want to be going. If you like them, that's on you. But I for one don't want any of these 'aids' on my vehicles.

More snow coming to the east coast so I guess we will have more abs complaints. Pull the fuse.

Added a cap, thin flooring with padded carpet for camping. Added rear lights and backup camera with new 7" display head unit.
I have a 2006 Tacoma 4X4 off road. I am also driving with the original tires which have about47K miles on the so they are clearly done. I recently had a 5" wet snow and was driving through my subdivision where the speed limit was 25 MPH. I was driving around 17 MPH or so because of conditions. I could not get this damn truck to stop! For all the good the brakes did, I would have done just as well by putting the trunk in neutral and coasting to a stop (OK, maybe I am ranting a bit). I ended up running a stop sign! I really feel that I could have stopped much quicker with non-ABS brakes. Why do I say that? Because when I hit the gas, the truck accelerates just fine (in 4X4 drive). Its a bit squirrely. but is easily controlled. My truck goes good, but stops poorly. I think the ABS is way too sensitive. The next time I have a snow, I need to go to an empty parking lot and try a test with ABS on and off. Toyota will ignore this issue till someone sues them.

I am scheduled to get new Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac tires. I hope they fix things or maybe I will get a Ford.

By the way, I had an idea last night about what to try next time I can't stop. Assume that I am in four wheel drive. Now I hit the brakes and ABS kicks in. I am not stopping! Now, with the left foot, punch down the parking brake. ABS has no say in the parking brake, it is a mechanical thing. With the rear wheels locked up, that will lock up the drive shaft which will lock up the ring gear on the front differential. Now, the two front wheels can decide, between them, who gets to turn. If the friction is the same then neither will turn. If one wheel has good traction then it will follow the road; the other will turn backwards! Will this stop me quicker? What will ABS think?

I think you should disable the ABS by pulling the fuse or doing the ABS disable switch as mentioned by so many Northerners...

Or move South and don't have to mess with that snow ice crap...

On the few times we have had snow I have another way to deal with it. I stay home, drink beer and post on the Internet Forums. :)

I feel fortunate to be one of the lucky ones not impacted by these ABS issues. Lots of snow & icey conditions here in Maine from Nov-Apr (generally....maybe not this year with El Nino) and as long as I'm driving appropriately for the conditions, ABS rarely kicks in.

3 winters ago i was driving back home to ma from fl when you guys had that mini ice storm. Didn't have a tacoma, but i about shit my pants driving through sc and nc. They obviously don't treat the roads like they do here since they probably see ice 2 days a year. Every half mile or so the road (i95) would just be shiny with ice. There were cars in the ditch every few mins. I probably should have pulled over/exited. But got lucky.
