my drive shaft went out on me yesterday on my '99 Tacoma. What is the part name for this on the inside that went out? Haven't seen this before, was on when bought.

You should be able to rebuild that with a couple of universal joints and some time. Just make sure to match mark everything to get it back together correctly.

You can't normally find off the shelf ujoints for that double cardon. Toyota only sells the whole assembly. If you somehow find the rare ujoint that might work, it's kind of a bitch to do, and don't mess up the ball, there's a toon of little needle bearings that like to fall out. the whole thing is a wear and tear item, so it might be a good idea to find a decent driveshaft shop and they will rebuild it for much less than a new one.

And unfortunately not easily repairable. I'd be looking for a good used shaft, even if it needs new u-joints. If that fails, visit a local driveline shop and have yours redone, or a new one made. And grease the new one regularly.

After 98,000 miles I got a new drive shaft on my extended warranty, the difference is amazing, it's like I bought a new truck. What's weird is that the old drive shaft was in good condition no play anywhere. The new drive shaft is completely redesigned and is very different than the old one, it now has some sort of harmonic damper on it. The symptoms were: Felt like it down shifted while stopped or that I had been rear ended while stopped. ( Waiting at a traffic light)
Other things that have been replaced are all 4 wheel bearings. Removed and reinstalled the windshield several times for a strange wind noise. And ( drum roll please ) the POS Entune radio twice, still does not work properly. This is my 4th Tacoma, overall they are OK, drove a Chevy new midsize and it needs more refinement all over. Toyota better pay attention and listen to us owners though.

Thanks all. I found a shop close to me that rebuilds them. Got the whole thing rebuilt and lengthened for just under $400.00

That's not bad. The two specialized ujoints for the joint are usually about $85 each, so by the time you factor the ball rebuild, labor, shop fees, etc... fair deal. Hope you're gtg.
