Just had to throw the spare tire on for the first time today. Sucks - I was hoping my tires would last me another month until the BFG A/T KO2's came out in the size I'm looking for (265/70/17). Anyways...I noticed when I threw it on, it doesn't sink as far back into the threads as the regular rim, so when I tightened all of the lug nuts, I only had to turn them about 1/2 the distance as with the regular rim. I'm guessing this is normal? But just figured I'd check here as I'll probably be riding on the spare for a day or two before getting new tires. Thanks!

Your factory lugs will work with the spare as they have a taper to let you bolt up the steel spare....they will stick out further due to rim design. You can not use normal lug nuts on your alloy wheels.

In your picture I notice what look like scars on your tire, I lowered my spare to spray some Krown rust protectant on the lowering mechanism, and my spare has deep grooves in the tire matching the scars in your pic. They are fairly deep, and somewhat worrisome! I guess it's from the truck shaking and/or/bouncing under normal driving conditions, but I did not expect it to damage the spare. This is the first time my spare has been lowered, have the truck for a year. I would imagine that this will eventually wear through. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Noticed the same scars on my spare yesterday. Two long scars on the sidewall in four places. The spare on my 2010 has never been used, well, until yesterday. The grooves seem significant in depth. I am considering some sort of protection. Perhaps sheet rubber on the contact points. I haven't crawled under to see what was causing the damage.

I had the scars as well, there are actually 8 contact points from the tire touching the frame when cranked up. I put some old lawn hose split down the side, 8 pieces ~ 4" long, on the frame. No more contact of the tire on the actaul frame.

Hose solution seems easy enough. I will be able to say "see, this is why I saved that old leaky hose."

Exactly, my wife said why are you keeping that hose, and I responded "ya never know what you may need it for", she rolled her eyes at that point :). Last week she saw me installing it under my Tacoma and smiled.

    Just me
You may want to spray some undercoating inside the hose and on the frame. The split hose will trap moisture and dirt against the steel for your future corrosion challenge.

    Just a thought

Those scars are froom crossmember. I got a nail in a 1k mile tire while back and they couldn't fix it. I pulled the spare tire off rim and threw it on alloy wheel. Took forever to get those dimples out but now I can barely see them.
