Question from an electrical "ra-tard"

Hey guys, I just order a Blue Sea aux fuse box for my truck. I also have an LED light bar on order. Since I'll be running the extra fuse box, will I need an aftermarket wiring harness? My uneducated mind says no, but like I said, I know nothing about electrical. The lighted rocker switch I got for it has 5 "pins" on it, and in my head (long story short) wire from light to switch, wire from switch to ground, wire from switch to fuse in aux box, power from battery to aux box, am I right?

Sounds like OTRATTW.

 

You need a relay to feed the light bar. The switch will turn "on" the relay. You will need a 6ga. or larger to feed the Blue Sea fuse panel. I don't know what you mean by "wire harness". All wiring for this mod will be new.

If I'm looking for constant power, is a relay really necessary?

 

You don't need a wiring harness. You can just go buy some #12 AWG with some lugs and a crimper, and a relay if you desire.

 

this is the way you can run it.... get a relay harness for the LED bar.

run the harness to where it needs to go
the relay should be close to the aux fuse block (if possible)
mount the fuse block in a suitable location

run 6 gauge fused power wire to the (+) aux fuse block
run 6 gauge ground wire to the (-) aux fuse block

pick 1 of the fused outputs and label it
take the fuse out of the power wire to the relay harness. Pin 87 of relay
place that fuse into the selected slot or wait until you have completed the rest of the wiring (Preferred & Safety) * make sure the fuse is the correct rating for the light bar.*

cut off the fuse holder to the relay

put a ring or spade terminal on the end of that wire and attach it to the fuse block selected slot

run 2 wires through the firewall to the switch
connect 1 wire to the "to light" terminal on the above picure
connect the other end of that same wire to the relay for pin 86. this provides the power to activate the relay.

connect the 2nd wire to the ground side of the switch.
connect the other end of that same wire to the grounding block on the fuse block.
*You can ground the switch in the cab and not use this wire*

pick a switch 12volt source in the cab to power the lighted switch and active the relay
run a fused wire from switch source to the "to battery" pin of the switch

connect wires to switch
wire the switch as seen in the picure

connect the LED bar power wire to pin 30 on the relay
connect the LED bar ground wire to a chassis ground or aux fuse box ground block

connect relay pin 85 to ground

reinstall fuse
check for operations / flip the switch.
