Hello all. As I spend a lot of time on TacomaWorld and ZERO time on Facebook I thought I would share this here. My 28 yo wife it extremely sick with Chronic Lyme Disease and has been bed-ridden for the past year and a half. Co-workers have set up a fundraising website to tell her story and try to raise money to help with the medical costs. Please read. Thanks for your time.

    http://www.youcaring.com/medical-fundraiser/help-megan-fight-chronic-lyme-disease/298907

    excerpt:

Megan is 28 years old and was recently diagnosed with Chronic Lyme disease (with co-infections of Bartonella and Babesia) after 8 years of suffering with undiagnosed crippling headaches, chronic pain and extreme fatigue. Megan’s condition has deteriorated so significantly that she is now confined to her bed or a wheelchair. Her pain is so severe that she routinely blacks out, losing all consciousness and memory. Every day is torture for her. Megan is incapable of getting herself in and out of bed, preparing her medication, or even getting herself a glass of water. Her husband, Matt, has been forced to leave work as Megan requires professional medical care 24/7 that they can’t afford. Matt cares for Megan every day and is to the point of being constantly nauseated due to the stress and exhaustion. On top of all of that, Megan will no longer be able to have the children her and Matt dreamed of having as she risks passing the disease on to them. In prolonged cases of Chronic Lyme like Megan’s where a diagnosis is not made immediately, it leads to neurological illnesses, including paralysis, heart failure, and death.

Matt and Megan have already spent hundreds of thousands of dollars in travel and medical expenses over the 8 years of her illness trying to find a diagnosis. Now that Megan has been diagnosed with Chronic Lyme disease, treatment is estimated to cost over $100,000, none of which is covered under any medical plan in Canada because the Canadian medical field does not recognize Chronic Lyme as an actual disease. Those sick with Lyme disease, an infection spread to humans through tick bites causing dozens of different symptoms, are left to seek treatment on their own without any assistance from the Canadian medical system.

Matt and Megan have already incurred significant debt, are at risk of losing their home, and have exhausted their savings as they continue to go further into debt to pay for the medical and travel expenses they have incurred to date. Megan has begun treatment through a doctor in Seattle who specializes in chronic illnesses. The treatment is extremely painful and the cost of travel, on top of the extensive treatment costs, is unbearable.

Matt and Megan cannot continue without our help. They will certainly lose their home and any ability to seek treatment for Megan as the debt piles up. Matt’s co-workers have gathered together and started a fundraising campaign. Please join us in helping them out and donate today!

Best of luck in her recovery! I can relate to some extent as my wife also suffers from a chronic disease. Although she suffers the most, both parties share the pain. Makes you think about the vows you take, "in sickness and in health" never became more real!

Prayers for the couple and family

Damn , sorry to hear , I know a man local to me that got Lyme Disease too , not fun

Have you considered contacting CBC's Go Public program to take up your cause about medical not covering your expenses ? That would certainly lift the profile of this issue .

Not the first time I've heard about Lyme disease not being covered. I have a cousin that is 40 now but got Lyme Disease when he was 7.

    Nasty stuff. Insurance companies suck.

Prayers to her and all family members.

Thanks for the suggestion. Lyme has been in the media quite bit lately. It's become a political issue with a Bill passing recently with is compelling the Government through legislation to develop a diagnosis and treatment plan. I believe change is coming but it's a long way off. Most medical experts in Canada are fighting it.

Our medical expenses are with a doc in Seattle and Cdn docs are not even willing to confirm the Lyme diagnosis even with a positive blood test from a clinic in California. As such, not only are the expenses not covered, they're not even tax deductible because I can't get a letter from a Cdn doc telling me I need to go to the doc in Seattle. Very difficult disease to fight even with all the resources in the world. Treatments right now include stem cell therapy in Mexico and hyperthermia treatment in Germany. The Antibiotics or herbal treatments practiced in US are only able to, at best, beat it back enough that the symptoms are minimized but are not capable of curing it. Relapses continue to occur so this will likely be a lifelong battle unless the medical community comes up with a cure.
