Every winter I have this issue, I've seen other tacomas with this, but not all of them. Is it water in the gas or something else? I could extend my tailpipe, but even then it would probably not fix it. Any thoughts??

It's odd how some tacomas don't have this issue though. I was parked beside another tacoma today in a parking lot and he had nothing on his truck and mine looked like this. Maybe Shell gas has a higher maple syrup content!

Does it happen on both sides? Looks like the buildup is BC that is a void where an eddy forms I think. And then the radiant heat from your exhaust is melting it. If it only happens on one side that's just condensation from the exhaust.

If you take your flaps off that might help cut it down.

No, only the one side with the exhaust. I might just extend the tailpipe and see if that helps, that or cut it off!

My 2012 does it. Its not cold enough here for it to breeze but i constantly have black shit on my rear quarter panel and it drives me insane. Next nice day i'm gonna climb under there with a hack saw and cut it back under the bed.

Water is one of the main byproducts of combustion. Don't worry it's not water in your gas.

It's not the water they're concerned with. It's that damn maple syrup that has been known to cause fuel injectors to clog up and diabetes too.

Water is the results of the catalytic converter, not the combustion process. The catalytic converter combines Carbon Monoxide ( CO ) with Unburned Hydrocarbons ( HC ) to produce Carbon Dioxide ( CO2 ) and Water ( H2O ).

That is why your exhaust drips water.

Not true, my commute is all highway miles. It's just the overall design of the tailpipe. Funny thing is I see lots of tundras with the same frost buildup. I might try cutting the tailpipe back about a foot, add a coupler with some clamps, and direct it down a bit more. This picture isn't even that bad, Some days I've had 1/4" of ice buildup back there, I know its not a concern, it just looks bad.

I live north of you OP and I have the same problem. It's doesn't do anything, doesn't hurt anything and I don't worry about it at all. I've seen other cars/trucks with similar problems. There's nothing to worry about.

I do 95% highway driving with minimal idling.
