I have read numerous threads about the rocky mounts for the rails for securing bikes in the bed which is what I want...but I also have an extang trifecta tonneau cover that when folded up takes up the first 2 feet of the bed and would drive me nuts trying to take it off/put it back on - so my question is has anyone mounted the bike sideways in the bed?

    thanks

Amo, not to threadjack, but I have a retractable tonneau that takes up the first foot behind the cab which also negates use of rocky mounts or similar rail mounts.
Before I bought a bike carrier, I found an inexpensive, strong method to haul bikes was the use of Delta bike pro fork mounts attached to a 2x6.
Depending on the length of your bed, they may be an option........

Thanks for the reply - unfortunately I still think that there won't be enough space with that method...

I have mounted my road bike sideways with the cleat mounted fork mount that Toyota used to sell.
Any fork mount attached to the side rail should work though.
You can always mount the fork and kick the rear over to one side if it is close.

as above...with the tonneau cover on I can't access the back rail...thinking about just using the side rail and kicking the rear tire a bit on an angle...

...thought about one of those but would like the option to lock the bike while at work.

Towels work exactly the same. Attach a 10ft wire cable with a lock and bam. Secure.

Generally, I avoid taking wheels off at all costs. It can be a pain, especially with thru-axles and DH bikes. Plus, stacking $$$ bikes on top of each-other is no good either.

I also use a stand-up bike rack attached to the hitch.

I'm in the same boat as OP. I have the Extang folding cover and am looking for a way to secure 2 bikes during trips. I do have the long box so that might be do able with the Delta bike pro fork mounts attached to a 2x6. Idealy I would love for a way to secure my bikes while they are laying down so I can have the cover closed and everything locked away nice and discretely.

    Off topic, but...
Does that motorcycle in the background of your pic have a mountain bike attached to it??
It sure looks like it.

I have the same cover. I just spend the 3 minutes needed to remove and the 6 to reinstall when time.

I have no special gear in the bed, simply stand the bikes up and lash them down to the various hooks available.

Not sure what your problem with the off/on of the Extang is; a major reason I bought it was because it was so light and simple.

When I had the extang trifecta folding cover, I attached the bike form mounts next to the cab, on angle iron that came up the front of the bed, over the top of the tonneau.

Then I placed the bikes on top of the tonneau, holding rear tires down with a ratchet strap, front wheels in the bed.

Couldnt you put a fork mount on the side cargo rail and swing the bike into the box? Ive been thinking about doing this because i have an Access cover but i dont like rolling the cover all the way up to the cab (Lazy AF i know). wouldnt hurt to get a fork mount and try that....
