I'm going to 255/85-16s from 265/75-16s on my 03 v6 and have read about the issues that causes with the speedo and tach... I found a write up on installing a Dakota Digital Interface to correct the problems with them. The issue with that is the install was on a truck without ABS an mine has it... Will that cause issues and if so are they livable issues (I.e. I don't want my ABS to go out and cause me to slam into a bus full of nuns or something). Anybody got any experience with this on an ABS equipped

I got the same size tires and abs, no problems. I just put a different speedo gear in. Use this equation to figure out what size you need: Old wheel diameter x old Speedo gear teeth, divide by new wheel diameter = teeth on new gear (each tooth accounts for about a 3% change).

    Speed sensor gear part numbers:

    AT
    30 tooth 33403-39365 3.4/2.7
    32t 33403-39425
    33t 33403-39415

    MT
    28t 33403-39585
    30t 33403-39365
    31t 33403-39345
    32t 33403-39425

It all depends on the vehicle. The ABS system uses the vehicle speed sensors to check for ABS operation, not the sensor in the transmission. So even if you were to correct the speedometer, it wouldn't affect the ABS system.

So it may be different from 03 tacoma to 03 tacoma? The Dakota site says that it could interfere with the control algorithms..... I guess I'm asking will it be safe to use it?

Is that a dealer part? How do I get to the spedo gear? Does that fix the odometer too? The tire accounts for a 8% increase, will a gear with 3 more teeth (to get me to 9%, making up for the 8% increase) fit the stock location?

Yes, those are dealer part numbers. It is on the right rear of the transfer case, one bolt and an o-ring. Odometer is fixed too. I think I went two less teeth if I remember right (less teeth for bigger tires) I also had a different tooth count to start with (stock 4.30 gears). I'll see if I can find the article that explained it to me and post it up for you.

So with my new 33s I would have to multiply the old tire 31 inches by (say I pull that gear and its a 28T). 31x28 and divide by 33?

Mines an 04 with abs and i have had no problems with it interfering and abs still works. I think all manufactures have to put that disclaimer on there product, beings we live in a sue happy world they don't want to be held accountable for someone hooking this up wrong. Also the DD unit can be used in more ways then just Speedo recalibration.

Yes, more than likely the one you have is a 30T so the 28T would work.
Also, here is the page that helped me understand the gearing a little better (sorry it's for jeeps).

It can be. For instance speedometer signal input is different for a manual truck than it is with an automatic. I keep getting them mixed up, but on one model the speedometer data is actually taken from the wheel speed sensors, not the transmission speedometer sensor. (On that vehicle the speedometer sensor on the transmission/transfer case is only used for transmission diagnostics) While the other one does use the speedometer sensor for the speedometer reading.

Just pulled the gear its a 30 tooth, I counted 30 teeth and it had 30 stamped on it. What's my next move? Just order the 28, pop it in and tada!!!??

So after following along here , for the most part .... I mean I haven't studied, and analyzed all the technical data .... I'm Wondering what the best way to go here is ?
    I have 33's and 4:56 gears.
I'm way out ( so I believe) on the speed-O-Meter , and Odometer.
A friend explained gears to me in the best explanation I heard so far.
With stock 3:73 your drive shaft spins 3:73 times for every 1 rotation of the wheel. With 4:56 gears , the drive shaft spins 4:56 times for every wheel rotation. Makes perfect sense to me.

Anyway... I checked out the Dakota Digital unit and like it.
I'm considering buying it , but would like to hear more feedback ... That makes sence before I do.
Currently I have an Ultra-Gauge , but I'm not so happy with it. It's nice and works for what it is , but it doesn't correct the odometer , nor the speedometer.
    . .

I think you can get yours recalibrated at the dealership if it's an 05+. I was only considering the Dakota unit because mine is and older analog speedo. I think your newer is digital. I would holla at the dealership.

I have asked the dealer where I bought the truck if a re-program was available , and was told Nope ... Not possible .

I cannot believe that it's impossible . I think it's more of a corporate policy , that boils down to money $ , warranty , liability , which after boiling those ingredients , all that's left is Money .... Not to be made by Toyota.

    Just my thinking.
