With the addition of two lab pups to our family I need to make more room for gear. We definitely take more shit than we need but I'm thinking about adding a roof rack to my truck.

I didn't even know they made products like this for Access cabs. Anyone have any experience with them? Yakima, Thule and Rhino Rack all make systems for Access Cab Tacomas without OEM rails, they clamp onto the frame of the roof above the doors. It says they hold anywhere from 100-165lbs and run from $250-$500.

Does anyone have any experience with these types of rails?

I want to put a couple rubbermaid containers up there with gear in it, nothing heavy. Something like this:

I love Yakima and I have a Load Warrior on my DCSB. Using the Q Towers (I have bare roof so mine clip on the edge where the doors are). I used it on my ranger too and had a 265/75R16 Spare plus axe shovel and whatever else I could fit up there. Yakima is local to me here in Portland which is another reason I chose their product beside the history of great reliable product.

I'll post pics when I get a chance.

YaKima whispbar racks with fatcat ski holders here. I use it to carry around 11 foot surf rods all summer. The whispbar was worth the extra coin. Looks great. Fits great and is much more aerodynamic and quieter than the standard bars. I'll try to get a pic for ya when it's light out.

+1 on the yakima gear. Q towers and a rocket box. Dents are due to overloading. We only keep light weight stuff on the roof.

Thank you for all of the info guys. The Prinsu looks great but it also looks to be ~$600 before shipping and might be overkill for what I'm trying to accomplish.

For the Access cab guys, are most of you using the type of rail that I had pictured up top? The ones that clamp down over the edge of the roof? Any issues?

    Thanks!

I used to have a Yamina rack on my 2006 DCSB and it was very sturdy. THe fairing was a little noisy at high speeds but nothing terrible. I went with the OEM rack after the fact cause I liked how you can stow away the crossbars when you dont use them. Have you thought about a bed rack system? I have one for the winter when I go snowboarding.

    Yup,

I've had them on for a year now with the whispbars. Very solid, sturdy and quiet. I have no complaints, but I'm also not carrying much weight. Although they are rated for a quite a bit more, don't remember how much off the top of my head.

Access cabs can't get the OEM rack, they don't make it. As for the bed rack I have a softopper to keep things dry when we go camping as in Eastern Washington it's typical to get brief evening thundershowers, also keeps the dust off of everything.

I'm looking at building a shelf in the back which will help but I'm really leaning roof rack now too.

That's good to see. Yakima makes the Q system which is a little different that the Whispbars... as of right now I'm leaning towards the Whispbar through bar system. The S17 is the one for the Tacoma Access.

I know what you meant :D I run with a canopy that I need so that wouldn't work, not to mention a large dog crate for two labs.

    It does look fantastic though.

I would like to see more non-drilling options for the AC. I like that the Rhino Rack just clamps down onto the roof frame, but I also want a larger rack such as the Prinsu instead of just 2 cross bars. Are there any designs that feature both?

All of the options listed: Yakima, Thule, Rhino can hold baskets or other accessories. For me, as of now I'm leaning towards the through bar whispbar pictured above and a Yakima loadwarrior cargo basket.

I like the Prinsu but I don't want to drill into my roof... not ready for that kind of commitment and I don't plan on holding anywhere near the max weight of the yakima set. :D

The Prinsu stuff looks fantastic, and I haven't decided yet but ...
