I did just the opposite. Went from a 2011 FJ to a 2012 tacoma. I needed a truck more than I needed the FJ, as the FJ was not a daily driver. It was a good decision for me as I still need a truck I don't worry about, but I do miss the FJ. As far as just fun to drive, and I've driven both on 5,000 mile roundtrips, the FJ was the winner. I'm sure some day I'll get another FJ.

Thanks for the input. Didn't think to ask about switching the other direction.

My wife bought herself an FJ several months ago and I've had a Tacoma for several years. Both are manual trans. We live in Alberta so winter driving is the challenge. Both are good highway cruisers. The Tacoma is an excellent truck and has a good 4X4 system meaning it should only be used on slippery surfaces. The manual FJ on the other hand is in a different league. The manual (but not auto FJ's) is a full time, 3 Torsen diff AWD system with directional and traction control. The manual FJ is phenomenal on ice and snow. I assume the auto 4X4 FJ would be similar to the Tacoma.

And the extra weight in the back really helps the FJ in the snow. It didn't have the over sensitive ABS either. Mine was phenomenal in the snow with Nitto Terra Grapplers.

I went from a taco to FJ. Never once thought it was a bad decision. You do get used to the blind spots rather quickly if that's a concern. Off road is where is the FJ really shines. It surprises the hell out of me every time I take it out.

    FJ Relevance.

That's less of an issue. Replacing the windshield ('cause it's a rock catcher) is the real issue.

This is true. In three years of ownership I had the windshield replaced twice, but I also drove 75 on the highway every day to and from work.

Most glass companies will come right to your office and replace it on the spot, so it wasn't a huge issue.

Well to put in into perspective. I like to drive 75 on dirt and rock roads. Haven't replaced my windshield once. :)

Did I mention that I was usually right on the ass of the car in front of me? It was like a NASCAR track out there I tells ya.

It's not how YOU drive it's who drives in front of you or passes you that cracks your wind shield!

I have owned first and second gen. Tacos and 4Rnrs, leaving them behind wasn't to difficult after buy my 2007 fully loaded C package FJ Cruiser. Blind spots easily solved with round stick on spot mirrors and a full time camera and 7" monitor. Yeah I paid the big bucks for this beast then added 20K more mods the way Toyota should have... No complaints here and I doubt many if any Tacos are capable of going places the Fj can, at least mine. Now I will admit to working on building a radical 87" solid axle 4RNR that will be awesome off road but it will never yield the on road manners and comfort the FJ can offer. The only thing I really ever miss from the Taco was the bed for hauling big cargo and sleeping in back on camp outs.

I have my Taco and my wife had an FJ. We loved the FJ except for the shitty blind spots built into it. The mileage was worse than my Taco but it was a great off roader. We got rid of it after the tranny crapped out. Thankfully we had bumper to bumper warranty (through Geico) and they paid for the new $6k tranny. Our research found it was a design flaw and thus the replacement would eventually do the same thing so we got rid of it. Its sad such a great vehicle has a design flaw that eventually makes it unaffordable to keep long term.

I just picked up my dream fj about two weeks ago and before that I drove a 2000 4runner an before that two tacomas (03 and 09). I have to say that the fj is hands down my all time favorite toyota I've ever owned. It's such a unique suv, and really one of the last great real suvs I think we'll see from any manufacturers for some time if ever again. It's manners on road are great an off road well its a freakin mountain goat. I really don't regret switching to an fj one bit, in fact I wish I had done it waaaay sooner. The sound system is crazy loud compared to the tacoma, and as for the supposed blind spots from the c pillars? It's really not that bad, if you tend to switch lanes without looking over your shoulder first then that's the problem right there

ok so i did this. i traded mt 2008 taco for an fj, i loved the fj, off road its beast, fun factor a 10. but.. log drives the seats are very uncomfortable. and on many occasions i missed the bed of the taco. the suicide doors are a pain in the ass when having people get in and out. the taco is more practical. needless to say im back in a tacoma a new 2015. i loved the fj but im happier with the tacoma. if i was rich and could afford 2 trucks maybe i would have both.

I switched from a 2012 Tacoma to a 2013 FJ, URBAN today and so far love the FJ. Have been looking for one for a while and finally found a good one with low mileage. It drives so nice compared to my Tacoma with bilsteins and duratracs. Think I'll keep it stock for a while. Looks like I'll be getting way better gas mileage with it too! I have been wanting an SUV for a while now but didn't want one of those fancy things you can't take off-road. And really only used the box on the Tacoma like twice a year.

I went from an 07 TRD edition all black FJ to my '13 Tacoma. Blind spots yeah it's got them, never had a problem with them or anything else. The truck was really really good to me no issues at all. As someone said already surprisingly quick, go anywhere. I do miss it at times however I really wanted to go back to a pick up yet I wanted to stay with Toyota. My first choice was the Tundra, but I really didn't need the full size pick up. I them saw a Magnetic Grey Metallic Tacoma running around my hometown and I just fell in love with the way it looked. So I ended up with a DCLB in that color, Sport Edition. I love my pick up, but still miss the FJ.
