I ended up getting a lightly used savage 10tr 308 for long range shooting which u am very new with. I like it! And can't beat used-like new prices.

Get a good scope. A .308 can reach out to 1000 yards easily with a good scope and some training.

I've built an M24 and an M1A EBR that shoot .308. I try to stay with NATO rounds because of availability in bulk and cheaper costs.

If you don't load your own ammo, just something chambered in in .308 like a Savage 10-series or a Remington 700P (avoid the SPS; the finish is terrible with regards to rust).

If you do reload, then I would get something in a 6mm or 6.5mm variant, like 6mmBR, 6.5 Creedmoor, .260 Remington. The 6.5mm bullets specifically have a great BC compared to 30cal bullets.

But if you don't reload and have to buy ammo, a 6.5 Creedmoor might not be a bad choice in that it's becoming a popular cartridge, especially amongst match / target / precision shooters, so commercial ammo is available. Although 6.5 Creedmoor ammo topped off with a hunting bullet won't be as readily available or as diverse as .308.

I enjoy shooting lever actions. My next conquest is to get a barrett m99 single shot 50. No real pratical reason and i might want to try and get into long range shootin one day. Might as well buy the toys before i end up married with kids or something like that lol.

If you have a Tennessee drivers license, they have direct factory sales, and direct factory training on maintaining the weapons. On the other hand, they might have just told me that to sell me a weapon at a discount price since I was inspecting the plant for the DoD. If the deal is available to the general public, then I can take advantage of it, but I choose not to and told them that if I desired one of their products, I would buy it from my local gun store just to ensure there is no appearance of any wrong doing...

And as for the kid comment, I am coming up on 30 years as a Fed, and had 3" of grey hair trimmed from my beard today.

Anybody have any experience with a CZ 527 in .223 Rem? I'm really interested in a CZ 527 Varmint in .223 Rem. They look like great guns. Looks like maybe the laminant stock would be better if used for bench/target mostly. Although the walnut stock looks really nice. Anybody have one of these?

The first thing to consider is whether you reload or not. There are lots of great high BC bullets out there for reloading, but somewhat limited for factory ammo. Most factory ammo will shoot fine in factory rifles, but many of the higher BC bullets available for reloading require a faster twist rate than whats normal for factory rifles. A great example is the .243. There are several great long range bullets over 100grs but they aren't stabilized in most factory rifles. Higher BC bullets drift less in the wind and make long range hits easier. If you are going to reload, make sure the rifle will shoot the bullet you want to shoot.

For 500 to 700 yards, almost any accurate rifle will work. Start a high BC bullet at 2800fps or faster and you will be fine. Start with a good rifle with a great trigger. Get good optics and a range finder. Start practicing.

For a rifle that will be used mostly inside 600 yards, a .308 will work great and has several factory ammo choices for long range.
