I just bought my second single cab 4X4 2.7 '96...

I had completely forgotten, but the first one had an intermittent squeak/whine coming from the engine it would make that lasted about a second, maybe once every few minutes WHILE THE TRUCK WAS PARKED AND TURNED OFF...

I never figured out what it was, figured maybe I was crazy or had bees in my truck.:)

Just got the new one and the same weird intermittent noise is there while off and parked...

all I can think of is if you have an electric fan for the radiator then that's what you are hearing

then again, I suppose it could be possible that your fuel pump is stuck and constantly running.

if its the fan you will se it and if not, then take the fuel pump fuse out and see

Good thoughts, thanks. I was wondering if it was by design, but couldn't figure out why on earth it would have anything designed to run off battery while parked...

Whatever it is it never drained the battery on the old '96 even after having it parked for a month one time.

My truck does the same thing. Its up by the fuse box. Its like a buzz sound. Like zzzt zzzt zzzt, in a low tone. Am I right?

I forgot what it was.. I think it was located btwn the fuse box and the cab... should have some vacuum lines running to it. Has two round things on the top. Next time, pop your hood and look there. Should be that making noise/vibrating.

Its the evap canister, near the fuse box. Its normal, but I hear its annoying. The design was improved in later years to eliminate that noise.

I have attached a photo of the one on my '99. You should be able to see the difference.

Thanks! Mystery solved (except now I have to figure out what an evaporation canister actually does for the operation of the truck) :)

it traps the gas fumes in your gas tank and redirects then back into your intake system (so polar bears don't cry about global warming)

all it really does is provide a lot of ways to screw with your engine, throw CEL codes, or disable the truck so it doesn't run.

(all because of the freakin polar bears)

Is there really something that could go wrong with it that would disable the truck?

Speaking of ways to molest polar bears; pretty soon some of these Tacomas will qualify as "antiques" in some states... Any performance benefit to running a straight exhaust (no catalytic convertor)?

Not really. But if the cat craps out there's no need to replace it. But you'll have to fool the rear o2 sensor. You'll lose some back pressure as well.

well im exaggerating there a bit but it does throw CEL codes and made it extremely difficult to start or not want to start at all, but it wont shut the truck doewn while its running.

read this, there is a good explanation about what it is and what it does as well as the problems it can cause: http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=2367070
