What's the life span of the 4 cylinder? I found this for my son, but not sure if it's worth it. Not the original owner, but says it looks like a replacement frame.

2001 Toyota Tacoma 4 cylinder 4x4 automatic runs and looks good. Frame excellent....couple small dents and slight rust on body...see pics . 178000 miles comes with new inspection. $4800.00

    Thanks for any advice.

If it's been well-maintained, I think I'd go for it.

Maybe see if you can pull the carfax and see if there's maintenance records (my truck had been serviced by Toyota and all of that was on the report - gave me a little piece of mind).

Miles are a little high, but if it runs good it can probably go another 100,000 without issues. As long as the seller is honest about why he is selling it. I know people who had been burned by people selling vehicles because there are issues so they want to get rid of it before they incur huge expenses, but they don't disclose any of that when selling.

That being said, just the body and frame is worth the asking price even if you have to put a little money into it a year from now.

Your son will have to join the forum though, so there goes the budget...;)

The guy has only owned it for a couple of months. That has me questioning it.

Probably annoyed with how gutless a 4cyl auto is, but that might work into your favor if it's your sons first vehicle. :turtleride:

That would concern me too. Do you know any mechanic that can help you look it over?

I had the exact truck, the 2.7 is a fine engine, not gonna win any races but power will surprise you, if you keep it stock size tires.

Looks like the truck I just bought for my boy... 04 PreRunner, regular cab, 152,000 miles... Best I could get the dealer down to was $8k. I would go take a look.

Like all modern motors, depends on how it's been treated/maintained.

There is nothing inherently bad about the 4 cyl.

A compression test will tell you a lot, as part of a good mechanical inspection.

If you brought it home, an independent lab oil sample would be a good investment as well, to give an idea of the health of the oil bathed components.

300k w/only routine wear items should be fairly easy.
